  • Welcome to Utterly Art - Exhibition: Black Tendencies
More like early repentant sinners who try desperately to live against the temptations of both flesh and soul Barrioquinto explains that the figures were intentionally depicted in a crestfallen monochromatic state to emphasize the emptiness of the soul or perhaps their utterly hopeless longing to have one Around these characters is an explosion of decorative fragments forcing in a cacophony of screaming colors Flowers birds black trees with golden leaves cats butterflies everything cries in a visual noise of three dimensional sensory overload which is impressively contained inside the four flat closures of the artist s square canvases Each painting is coupled with a poem written by Andres good friend Dave Lock who has been doing essays for his recent one man shows The words are portraits frozen in a narrative state hiding in each a story of their own It s the innate order of things If you re good then your tendency is to turn bad and vice versa Barrioquinto says referring to the simple yet complex reality of things Iconographies and subtle representations of evil lie afloat inside his present batch of paintings Skull mark repetitions dead trees black sheep and even oversized sumos are found drifting

  • Welcome to Utterly Art - Exhibition: In Habitable Structures
their own devices visual morphemes push their way into our minds and morph into visual noise that is both nonsensical and irrational As a response Hong Sek Chern attempts to recreate what that can mean for her She has applied a traditional Chinese ink landscape painting technique and expanded upon one aspect from Xie He in his Six Methods of Painting 谢赫六法 In this succinctly phrased formula Xie He has advocated the method of chuan yi mo xie 传移模写 which is to translate from reality and depict in creation Loosely interpreting as active play with elements of buildings and structures Sek Chern creates depictions of supposed interiors that might suggest habitable structures Here the external wall of Old Parliament House is turned around and has taken on the guise of a platform that extends into the picture there a section of the Benjamin Sheares Bridge is used to prop up a wall and elsewhere a section of the Bayer Building is turned into a section of a landing The end result looks logical as the artist has maintained basic principles to enable a suggestion of space within a two dimensional surface which is seemingly in line with the structure of

daytime the population of Metro Manila swells to 10 million people which accounts for 13 of the Philippine population squashed into an area only about the size of Singapore island People rush in from the provinces in the morning and endure tedious traffic jams to get home at night Reynold Rendy dela Cruz s Siksikan Crowded series documents the suffocating journeys of longsuffering travelers as they endure the travails of the Philippine public transport system Packed like sardines Rendy portrays the harried masses in all their diversity with humour drama and irony whether an anonymous cipher in the MRT or noisy commuters swinging precariously from a jeepney accompanied by luggage marketing pets toys and chickens In two major pieces however Rendy moves on to different crowds firstly huddled neighbours cowering from a typhoon under makeshift scraps in Temporary Shelter and next the unbridled joy and hungry anticipation of a family gathering for a feast in Salo Salo As much as the crowd is part of the Filipino experience Rendy s Siksikan series gives us a witty and rambunctious facsimile Artist Reynold Dela Cruz Philippines Reynold dela Cruz is a self taught artist whose choice of career was vindicated when he

  • Welcome to Utterly Art - Exhibition: Beyond Comfort Zones
pleasure and suffering are but some of the opposing tendencies being negotiated anew by a populace clinging to the faith that a system Capitalism is synonymous with a concept Democracy As an artist eager to poke into the heart of the matter I am supporting my thesis that powerlessness is never a democratic stance Man s greed may be the culprit but the system that encourages it now deserves a doublethink if not a realignment of priorities For this exhibition I have adopted a post modern strategy a mix match of resources that blurs the boundary between authorship and appropriation Thus my own photographs are married with images and graphic symbols sourced from the internet a public domain The results are compositions filtered through my own sensibility but approximating the look of advertising billboards graphic design magazine layouts and illustration Even the colors remind me of graffiti and inner city neighborhoods Still most of the works are constructed narratives based on my observations of the realities of life as experienced by the majority These visual devices are employed not only as an ironic twist but to suggest a sense of place and time an epoch whereby these tools of marketing
