need the help from the people to make the environment become better As a example billions of people face food shortage due to global warming Half of the world s population could face severe food shortages by the end of this century as rising temperatures shorten the growing season in the tropics and subtropics increase the risk of drought and reduce the harvests of dietary staples such as rice and maize by 20 percent to 40 percent according to a study published in the journal Science We can know all of these information through the media The media is try to help us to avoid such condition happen around us The media is not exaggerating the condition of the environment the condition still haven t happen around us Somedays such condition will be happen in our country but wwe still cannot confirm when will be happen Therefore we need to keep our place clean and recycle all the things that can be recycle This may help us avoid from the condition happen around us jasmine1801 Media is a good form of source in educating the public and letting us know more about the environmental problems They are caused by a few factors First of all it is the human factor As our society are constantly pushing for convenience one of the invention are plastics which are daily produced As a result the production of plastic bag has caused a large amount of gas guzzler which causes air pollution that further leads to global warming On top of that the media shows that global warming causes the raise of temperature that will also cause the ice at the north pole to melt leading to a rise in sea level However there is a change in temperature which we can experience it ourselves On top of that the weather recently is getting warmer and the seasons were inaccurate This allow the media not to have the need to exaggerate on the dire condition of the environment Personally i feel that the with the media we can have a better understanding of the problems we all have created and being able to solve them quickly All in all i disagree that the media is exaggerating the dire condition of the environment in which we are living syahirah I believe that media is one of many tools that is used to store and deliver information or data and that everything s sent are the facts In this case i disagree that the media exaggerates the dire condition of the environment in which we re living We do not only hear or see the news about the environmental problems but also im sure we re experiencing it now The extremely hot weather that we re experiencing these few days is unbearable Therefore i strongly believe that media does not exaggerate the dire condition of the environment in which we re living right now xueer I disagree that the media exaggerates the dire condition of the environment in which we re living Media plays an important part in educating people which are ignorant about the conditions of the world they re living Global warming deforestation are human acts that contributes greatly to the dire conditions of the environment The disasters such as soil erosion floodings famine are evidence that the environment is being seriously damage by the humans These we could see from the fatal crisis that is happening around the world especially the increased in human impact earthquakes which are caused by human s massive destruction to the earth with aid of massive mahines Thus the media show us what s the reasons of all this crisis which are happening around the world we re living in especially in documentaries and they re not exaggerating They show people what are the consequences humans are facing in the far or near future if they continue to take the the environment for granted Lastly they serve as an warning to humans so that they ll think before they do anything that will harm the environment nonamegiven93 I agree that the media would sometimes tend to exaggerate the dire condition of the environment in which we re living However this is just to raise our awareness to the condition of our environment as i believe that this exaggeration would soon become a fact as the years go by if we do not solve the issue I am sure that most of us have felt the effects of global warming because the moment we reach our classroom we are already perspiring with our T Shirt wet and sticking to our back In the North and South Pole the polar icecaps are melting also the size of both have became smaller as it was 10 years ago Besides if you the ice and snow keeps on melting the ocean level would rise How many more levels do you think it would rise before it would cover a small island like Singapore Also Global Warming is causing the destruction to some of our ecological systems such as the mangrove swamps and or coral reefs Animals plants or any other organisms living in these ecological system would go extinct at an alarming rate Earth would then lose the beauty of these ecological systems In conclusion the media may exaggerate the condition of our environment however it is all just to create an awareness By having an awareness of such you can help do your part by preventing Mother Earth from suffering anymore damage Are You Doing Anything Climate change Global warming We often hear about it on the news the radio and read about it in the papers and magazines But are you acting on this large scale problem Has the media influenced your attitude and behaviour when it comes to saving the environment By ginachiam on 03 May 2010 Comment Like Report 80 Comments jervaishowes In regards to whether or not I am doing anything to save the environment I would have to say no I am not I think that the media has not gone very far in promoting the green movement we may hear of earthquakes and natural disasters all over the world but we never hear about how climate change may be affecting it Thus people would take it to be just a chance event as they have for millions of years Thus the media would need to try engage the audience in rational discussion in order for a positive change to take place noisebomb Hey guys The media has somewhat influenced me as i am more aware of the state of the world and start to recycle recycable stuffs I think that the media does not fully influence everyone as we still see people not recycling not saving electricity for example they do not turn off their lights when there is no one in the room I believe that the media can put more effort to make sure that most people are going green ncoleey I do think I am playing my part like using both sides of a paper rejecting the use of carriers if I do not need one I might not be organizing or participating in large scale environmental events but i do think my little actions do help at least I may even be able to influence my friends to follow too I do not think the media has influenced me in my attitude and behavior My opinion is that you don t actually need someone to tell you hey you should play a part to save the environment To me it came naturally that i should help preserve the environment savitha I would say that i am playing my part in saving the environment as i do recycle things at home save electricity as it saves money and save paper It is not because of the media influence but simply because of my awareness towards global warming and my understanding on the situation that I play my part in saving the environment If the media could give a stronger message across people on the issue of global warming it might influence people to start playing a part in conserving their environment jiaqi I think that i did play my part in saving the environment by recycling recyclable stuffs and use both sides of the paper to reduce the amount of papers waste By understanding the situation that happen to our environment i knew that it is a need for me to play my part in saving the environment I think that the media doesn t influence me much in my attitude and behavior towards saving the environment As we still get to see people not willing to play their part to save our environment where some are even worse by causing more pollution to our environment I think that if the media could give a more powerful message across to the people about the important of saving our environment from global warning it may boost more people to put in their effort in going green minli I think the media had influenced me to be more environmentally friendly such as switching off the lights when no one is using the room or recycling papers but not effective enough to change my attitude or behaviour in saving the environment on a large basis Personally i don t think that the media has stressed the problems of not saving the planet enough to get more people to start recycling their unwanted items Perhaps they should send a stronger message to the public to let them know the importance of recycling Though i m not recycling on a large scale i believe that everyday actions will contribute a little to saving the environment somehow candy023 I have became more aware of the global warming problems through the media I have been cutting down on the usage of the air conditioner not over using plastic bags and have been making an effort to try and recycle recyclable products due to the influence of the media I believe that the media have been making an effort to spread the need for recycling and stopping the pollution However I think that the media can only do so much and the rest is up to the people to put in their efforts into saving the environment farahani On a personal note the media does influence me on saving the environment Everyday news on the climate change and global warming would be broadcasted on most local channel news Its almost impossible to miss I do feel I am playing a part in saving the environment like recycling used papers plastics and cans Not wasting paper and such Eventhough my actions are not something noticable but it does help the environment in many ways martinpriscilla Yes i think the media has influenced me on the climate change and the global warming I like the idea of the 60 Earth Hour where you switch off your lights to take your stand against climate change I suppose it is a very attractive way for people like us to participate and help save the environment at the same time I won t lie i am not helping a lot though i just do my little part such as switching off the lights or fan when not in use but i do believe that these small parts helps in a little way timothychuahsienyin Well it depends on what you consider doing your part Are you the extreme type that says any sort of pollution is bad and that we should go back to living in tents To explain what i mean as we are doing what seems right in the eyes of the public an example would be not littering in public burning things just for the fun of it Then i think you are doing your part If everyone just followed common sense then don t you think the place would be so much cleaner I think less emphasis on going green and promoting social civic mindedness would be better This way everyone would actually bother to care for the earth a place that whether we like it or not is our home and that if we neglect it It will come back to haunt us However i digress I do try to cut down on my paper usage turn of lights fans use the air conditioner to cool the room then use a fan I don t bring the items for recycling down to the bin but i do place it in a bag set aside for recycling and leave it to my brother to bring down I still feel that hammering some common sense into ones head is key treat public areas like you d treat your home With Pride Unless your home is not exactly the neatest place then please still bear in mind that others use the common space dirtying it would be a kin to spitting in someones face or chucking your litter in front of them and walking off meiyue Honestly i dont think the media are very active in promoting anything link to global warming save the earth and climate change But the school is the only place that really influence me a lot They keep promoting green day project and it helps to motivate us huiling Personally I feel that the media did influence my attitude and behaviour when it comes to saving the environment Media let people understand the importance of saving the environment and how to save the environment Since we are all living in the 21 century people will get their latest information from the media because it is accessible to everyone Thus media play an importance role in influencing the mindset of the people and I will also fully utilize the paper before throwing away junhao Frankly speaking I do not feel the media has really influenced me much on saving the environment Partly the reason because I do not watch advertisement or listen to radio like I use to in the past but nonetheless I do try to use the fan instead of the air conditional system to cool myself and off the light when there s no one in any room To me these little actions are pretty common sense to me because as a Singaporean what comes right into our minds are to save as much money as we could in order to survive in the future Furthermore I do feel that certain people not only in Singapore are more money driven and as well as benefits driven in the society Therefore they tend to only do things which really affect them in a way or by gaining benefits out from it As for the other part of the community they might be thinking that in a population of 100 people so what if I don t help save the environment if 99 people are doing it does that make a different Think about it if everyone could gain extra benefits such as lower taxes in our country I am pretty sure everyone would start caring for our environment Sorry for my selfishness but I will only do something extraordinary if it s really came to a point it affects too much Peace iamagoodboy Yeah I did my part and I believe others do too Little things like using both sides of the paper not asking for plastic carriers using less toilet paper taking shorter showers and so forth But do yo really think all these gonna help Do yo really think all these small things will return the former glory of Mother Nature I am not saying that our efforts are insignificant and useless I find it very heart warming that they are people who are well aware of the environment and are actually doing something But there is only so much we can do as an individual Then what about the persons who can really make a difference the governments of the world Are they doing anything Take the Kyoto Protocol for instance in my opinion it s just rubbish They meet talk sign talk and more talk So where is the change Everything is only in theory and paper Even the world s only superpower have no intention of joining the club Why the big question It is because of the economic and financial interests No one wants to give something for nothing Most people tend to think on a short term basis and of course saving the climate is completely absurd in that context However they do not know that they are paying an even a greater price in the long term I took Pure Geography in secondary school I know how bad the climate change and excessive global warming can get Will money be able to protect them when Mother nature unleash her wrath Does collecting pieces of paper and yellow shiny metal outweigh saving The Blue Marble our only home in the vast universe For the media I think they have done their part Although the message is somewhat not clear Most commercials only show how to save the environment not why we should save it Other than these commercials and posters the government have to step in to enforce this positive new culture of reducing reusing and recycling phamnguyen In my personal experience on the way home everyday 2 3 Km I come to notice that there is only one Bus Station provided with a 3 bin dustbin where rubbish will be classified correctly Therefore eventhough I do convince myself not to anyhow throw rubbish into dust bin but just what can I do in this situation besides dump it into a normal dust bin or should I choose the second option where I need to walk for 1 2 km just for the sake of throwing the rubbish And personally I think the Media has done a fine job educating people not to littering saving electricity not wasting paper ect but what really matters is the mindset of the people who watch those advertisements For instance littering or not pretty much depends on how they actually think of it whether It is bad or It is okay to do so To be honest turning off the lights turning on the air conditional systems only when necessary saving paper and reusing the re usable are the only things that I actually do zhongqiuyue i think media did influence my attitude and behaviour on saving the environment In this modern knowledge society media plays the role of facilitator deveplopment disseminator of information and being an argent of change Environment awareness is one of the important issues which media presents consciously and effectively to say a few things to the people Media plays a vitual role in spreading th etrue message It is one huge factor in our environment that influences decisions and acts to spire people People like us start playing our part to save the environment like recycle and reuse zhongqiuyue i think media did influence my attitude and behaviour on saving the environment In this modern knowledge society media plays the role of facilitator deveplopment disseminator of information and being an argent of change Environment awareness is one of the important issues which media presents consciously and effectively to say a few things to the people Media plays a vitual role in spreading th etrue message It is one huge factor in our environment that influences decisions and acts to spire people People like us start playing our part to save the environment like recycle and reuse farid Yes when I shower in the bathroom I turn on 1 less light alybelle Honestly I m not the type of person who would go the extra mile just to find a bin which is made specifically for dumping plastic glass or paper that is I think it is a common thing for all Singaporeans We only throw it in the bin when we see one otherwise back to the normal green bins that you see everywhere I think we are used to being pampered with everything that we want everywhere we need or want it However we are not to be blame for it as we are living in the city which is full of ease I think that media did quite a good job in reminding people to save electricity or throw rubbish in the specified bins It may not be effective to some people but I m certain that it has affected a minority percentage of Singaporeans in the effort to save the Earth Despite that I do try my best to switch off all the lights or electrical sockets which are not being used when I m at home That s the best that I can do for now hasif Large scale problem Maybe not but for normal daily activities yes I do apply going green concept daily such switching of the lights when I m not using turning on the fan instead of the air conditioner and even maximise the water when do the laundries Yes it might be minimal but if each of us do our part it can be a large scale impact I do feel that the media has done its part as more people including me are Aware of the situation now I do feel its important to save the earth as we human are living and sharing it The disasters and climate change are like a wake up call for us to be more friendly to mother earth Afterall we have only 1 earth D elvi Media really did influence my attitude in saving the enviroment Honestly last time I was a person who would just throw away any rubbish in my hand anywhere I really don t care about the consequences of all these But after listening to the radio reading some news article and magazine about the effect og the global warming I feel like I should have the responsibllity to save the Earth the planet where I live in Saving the Earth start from ME will you be joining me melvina Nowadays we often hear a lot of environmental issues from earthquake global warming to the issue of high sea water level I would say that media plays a great role not only in promoting the negative effects to this issue but also in influencing people s behaviours From media I have become more aware of my part to the environment and have started in participating in many ways to reduce this negative impact such as bringing my own recycle bag whenever I go shopping turning off electricity whenever not in use and bringing my own water bottle to reduce the unnecessary usage of plastic bottle Media did help in promoting the eco friendly solution to solve the environmental issues but it is still sad to see that only a minor percentage of people are actually take action to do it lazieekel Well to say the truth I am not doing anything large scale about it The media actually plays a big part in influencing peolple as people are always looking to the media for information However for me the media did not really pays a large part in influencing me about it For my part I recycled more and reuse more wenjie we can only do things like recycling which will only slow down the process which will not solve any problems Furthermore saving electircity is also just slowing down the process whereby not much have been slove But well its just part of our contribution to help slowing down the process so that they can invent more stuff to replace Well got me i recycle unwanted materials and off lights when im out of the room wenjie continue from top as i accidentally pressed publish Media have already done a great job in telling us all to reduce reuse recycle But telling us and making us do is another problem Because some people are stubborn and like th do what ever they wan the media will never get their aims I ve done my part on recycle and reducing so its up to the others jiaqi909090 Yeah the media has slightly altered my view on my attitude and behavior when it comes to saving the environment Without media there are some people in the world would have not known what are the environmental issues people in different parts of the world are facing Thanks to the media many people are starting to recycle the things they use everyday to save the environment nurulshahira I believe that the media has play a crucial role in encouraging us to save the environment whether in a minor or major role The fact that the media keep emphasizing the need and the impact of saving the environment has motivate me to do bits for the place we call home Personally I try to make a conscious effort to practice the 3 Rs which has been drilled in us since primary school Personally I would make a conscious effort to recycle plastic bags use both sides of a paper and to switch off electricity when not in use even though it may be tedious But I do believe that this are habits we should cultivate and practised even though it may only be small acts All in all I do believe that the media has played an important role in raising awareness of the importance of conserving But at the end of the day it is the choice and responsibility of the individual to act on it khamisah I think that the media has influenced me on saving the environment Well it does not influence me that much i must say But i am aware about it through the media I am saving the environment by recycling plastics and cans and also saving electricity But to save the environment everyone has to play a part So everyone must not depend on the media to help spread the word to save the environment They have to take the initiative and be aware that they have to save the environment wongliying Yes I feel that the media has played a slight role in influencing me to save the environment A few years back there was this advertisement whereby a few teens explain the harms on why we need to save the earth and how to After that advert I realized that I actually followed and switched off the electrical sockets every time I stop using the appliance However I feel that the media is still lacking as these adverts are getting lesser and it s not played often I feel that parents play a greater role My parents keep nagging at me at a young age to off the lights or fans So it s already a habit However I will not go the extra mile to recycle items If I see a recycle bin okay I will try my trash according In my estate there s only one recycle bin and it s located a few blocks away from mine Thus I feel it s a chore to carry the heavy trash and walk quite far just to throw it Thus I feel that they should increase the number of recycle bins and place it at the area where everyone can easily access to it chewping I felt that media did play a part in influencing the attitude and behaviour of saving the environment However not all singaporeans are playing their part in saving the enviroment like recycling Taking myself as an example i will not throw my rubbish according to the paper bin plastic bin but rather just a normal bin Therefore even though media did play a part i think that is not enough Maybe having more advertisment and posters can constantly reminds more singaporeans to recycle in order to save the enviroment wanqi i felt that that media has done alot in promoting the importance on playing a part to help to save the earth the environment however sadly to say it does not really influence much on my attitude and behaviour in helping to save the environment despite the fact that i know that our actions are harming the earth but not much people are really concern about it like me i wont really save paper even though i know that i can still use it at the back or something like this i wont go extra mile jus to look for a recycle bin and throw them according to it thus i feel that everyone should play a part to help save the environment not jus one or two person effort is enough therefore the media should put up more poster have more advertisement campaigns or promotions they can think of to improve on this situation and serve as a reminder to all the people farid Some global warming proponents are accepting a good financial income from the global warming scare and have become global warming propagandists to promote their interests These include some researchers who obtain research grants and some environmental organisations who need donations They are making a living by promoting fear of man made global warming Their behaviour is similar to that of the snake oil salesmen in the nineteenth century Snake oil salesmen sold snake oil that did not require real snakes to make it Global warming propagandists are selling fear of man made global warming and that does not require real man made global warming to make it The success of the global warming propaganda has induced some observers to argue that a conspiracy has created the imagined risk in the public s perception But consideration of the origins of the global warming scare deny the existence of any such conspiracy Interests coincided and supported each other And a coincidence of interests usually has a more powerful effect than a group of conspirators The origins of the scare are political and have resulted in political policies that now threaten serious economic damage for the entire world almost everything in this world is political and politics is dirty Man made global warming has become a major international political issue The imagined risk has become a real risk in the form of proposed government policies to inhibit CO2 emissions The Rio Summit in 1992 proposed actions to constrain the emissions and the Kyoto Summit in December 1997 is intended to establish binding agreements that will commit nation states to the constraints Although there are no real and potential risks of the global warming the effects of the constraints will cause real and severe economic damage All industrial and economic growth requires an abundance of available energy supply Anything that inhibits energy supplies reduces economic activity At Kyoto governments will be pressured to reduce CO2 emissions to far below their 1990 levels This requires cutting fuel supplies and therefore economic activity The effects would be much more severe than the oil crisis in the 1970s because the constraint on fossil fuel usage would be greater the increases to energy costs would be larger and energy demand has increased since then Already OECD countries Europe Japan and the US have agreed in principle to adopt the Berlin Mandate that requires them to cut their CO2 emissions to 15 below their 1990 levels by year 2010 The US Department of Energy DoE estimates that this would increase US domestic energy prices by between 80 and 90 and would increase the coal price to US consumers by 300 Also the DoE study determines that the Berlin Mandate would not reduce world wide emissions of CO2 Energy intensive industries would be forced to move from the US to places where the emission constraints did not exist or were not enforced This could even result in an increase to the emissions because the less controlled places are likely to have less energy efficient industries The DoE study goes further by saying that its findings are not specific to the US but apply to every industrialised country yuming I felt that the media have do a lot of things to encourage people to save earth but I don t think that all of the people have aware of the importance of that For me thouth I felt that it is very important to save our earth but sometimes I was very lazy to do something like the seperation of the rubbish For the seperation we can select something useful from the rubbish avoid waste of the material I think the media can do more to let people know the importance of that and encourage people to participate in saving our earth christine To me the media did influenced me on my attitude and behaviour by doing a part in saving the environment In the recents years we had come to the notice of global warming through the media through the news magazines radio and even videos Its the MEDIA who make us aware of the climate changes The MEDIA had pass down a message in saying People its time to do our part in saving our environment So its the media who make me aware how i can do Now i will turn off the lights whenever no one is inside the room i will turn on my aircon at 25 degree celsius and will only switch on during bedtime I always use both sides of the papers before throwing them away and reduce my usage of plastics bags Here are some of my ways in contributing to green enviroment Despite all this i believe the media can do more by doing more advertisements campaign to promote GREEN They will definitely cause a greater impact on us So people lets GO GREEN yveline The media has somehow influenced me towards my attitude and behaviour when it comes to saving the environment But somehow I don t think that it has a big impact on me and maybe it is due to my habits from young What I have done to save the enviroment is that when I buy things from shop I would try not to take pastic bags if it is not necessary sixuan i feel that the media had done a good job in saving the environment however despite of such effort made to influence people everyone is still not making the effort in saving the environment the media had even made it to such extent that it s through news magazines radios television websites YouTube videos and even in the threater Yes i am aware of such acts however i think ive been a failure in doing a good job to save the environment this is because even till recently i will still ask for plactics bag however it was till one day that i eavesdropped a father telling his daughter to not get the fast food cup cover so as to be environmentally friendly somehow after this incident i am more aware of the needs to take good care of our environment though the media had done a fabulous job in promoting the needs of it but somehow i feel that the best way is not always through the media but from the behaviour of others from the above incident though not impactful and influencial but somehow just by seeing others making the effort in wanting the environment to be save gradually you will also follow now i will not get plastic cup covers if im eating in also not getting plastics bags if i can put everything in my bag though this is the very basic if everyone is also making the same effort this world will be a better place to live in sixuan i feel that the media had done a good job in saving the environment however despite of such effort made to influence people

on how media can be used to save the environment I say use what the media is so famous for publicising Using the Media to show the real and full uncensored effects of how we REALLY are damaging the environment ought to bring some sense into some people Other uses include rather simple and attention By helenmok on 02 May 2010 Comment Like Report 3 Comments seth Rats I hit the word limit zidus yea mine also rebeccalai Recently on Channel NewsAsia there is a programme called the Age of Stupid It features a man who lives alone in the year 2055 a destroyed world The man viewed an t old footage from 2008 and asked why didn t we stop climate change when we had the chance I think it acts like a wake up call for everyone to start protecting the environment if not the world will be in a devastating state in the future How Can Media Help In my opinion the media has a lot of influence on the major parts of the population so through media we could send out messages often between movies like save energy consumption and grow more trees I think they should emphasize more on these topics as global warming is getting worse each day By rudyhew on 02 May 2010 Comment Like Report No Comment How Can Media Do A Part Media can help save the environment by creating awareness to the public They can show more documentaries on tv which the viewers will not only be aware of what is happening but also see for themselves Simple reminders through the media like turn off the lights when not in use or use CFC free products may be small but it By sas on 02 May 2010 Comment Like Report

maybe a week or two then eventually they start to think Hey I m only one person How much damage could I possibly do anyway And they gradually start reverting back to their indifferent attitude again As for the second group they stick faithfully to their resolutions to do their part for Earth What about the majority The majority upon watching the movie may perhaps shrug it off as one of those cliché movies that feature the death of mankind due to their actions Honestly the media isn t going to help much in making us go green People just won t start making the effort until they actually see more than just a few disasters occurring around the world That s when they start panicking and attempt to start doing their part for Earth which by then would be too late I m sure Pea goalsinlife Honestly I think that this movie is not quite effective in changing people s mindsets on protecting or conserving the environment Sure we do feel sad when we look at those sad painful pictures flashing on the screens and our hearts give that sudden sour twinge but it would just be for that mere 5 seconds we feel sad and empathy Similarly with other shows that promotes environment protection as a theme to younger children like Avatar or Wall E or shows that promotes this theme to more mature audiences like The 11th Hour they all do make us feel upset and guilty but with the increase in such shows I think that people would gradually get immune to these pictures and would just shut down when these videos are played fathima I do have to agree that media is a very powerful medium in sending a message to its viewers However efforts by the media regarding environmental issues are not effective Firstly it should be done repeatedly A constant reminder is needed to reinforce the thought of saving our Earth We as the audience tend to focus on our personal lives more than the environment Obviously we watch those movies as a form of entertainment It might only have an impact on the minority not the majority as they do not have the time to think back about their actions or empathise with the movies directed Hence I strongly feel that the media is not effective hongkiat Personally i think that this movie would not be too effective on the public It may cause the people to feel guility about the things they could do and try to make amendments but most of them would probably go back to their old habits of not trying to save the environment in matter of days or even hours later the public would not be bothered as what they all think of is the present what happens in future they will face it later therefore the movie is not effective to the public oliviasng I feel that this clip works only to a certain extent but it only impacts us temporary Although it allows us to be aware of the environmental issue that s going on however this impact is only for a short moment Protecting the environment should be emphasized since young and it will be hard to change a person s bad behavior once he or she has gotten use to his her own ways of wasting the earth s resources Thus this clip only allows the people to know what s going on in our environment but it does little to change the people s views on saving the earth laingheeboon This video is not effective as people will only feel guilty for ten minutes after watching People will than temporary help to save the Environment for some time than it will slowly fade out In order to show the campaign is taking the effect Government need to step in and emphasis more on the Environment and Drill into a policy in order to really show progress jasmk Well basically its is effective on a temporary basis as it raises awareness for global warming The media is trying to portray to us that if we were to continue with our nonchalant attitude towards the environment the consequences could be dire However Humans are strange creatures they most of the time want to do things and see that they affect change immediately After a few days of caring for the environment they would go back to wasting Earth s precious resources as they don t see an immediate effect in doing all the work in protecting the environment Humans are strange creatures they most of the time want to do things and see that they affect change immediately tancw Media is a good way to create awareness but I don t think that it will be enough to scare all of us into action Some people will be scare into action but I don t think it will be long lasting The reason being people will still think that there are more important things to do However this is not true as it is just the way of people refusing to believe that environment issues it real The media will not be much use in this issue as compare to the government The government could sign the Kyoto Protocol or the Montreal Protocol Both of these protocols are aimed at fighting environment on the topic of global warming and ozone deplete respectively This will help the citizen to see that the issue at hand is important However many countries have signed this two protocol I had mentioned but more protocol should be introduces Also the government should take part in activities such as Earth Hour and National Dark Sky Week This will encourage the citizen to take part in the fight against global warming ozone depletion and climate change aen068 From my point of view i strongly feel that this is a unique way to reach out to people and get us to be aware of the possibilities of our inconsiderate behaviour towards Gaia Usually the media would only show what is happening but in this movie it shows us what HAS HAPPENED By callingour generation the age of Stupid it brings about a sense of curiosity in us wanting to know what it is all about And when we watch the trailer we or I more like it feeel that it is indeed effective because knowing the effects i do Not indeed want to experience this I do however also agree with some that it is only our wishful thinking ifi we think that the world will change 360degrees around and everyone will start to do their part to save the world Yes it is impossible for all to embrace a new way of life by using less water recycling all plastics or even start installing solar panels in our home Thus as an individual i feel that the best way to promote the act of GOING Green is to indeed begin from home Slowly and hopefully this small act of ours will become part of us and later on it will be noticed by others who wiil hopefuly start to follow The video is only effective to a small extent of our lives as individuals We are the guilty ones and thus it is only up to us to analyse how much damage the world is suffering from and start coming up with ways to prevent ourselves from facing doom shintaaa in my opinion movies about dooms day are not effective enough to impact people s conscience about environmental issue some people may see this kind of movie as a thriller as the movie is so dramatic or rather too exaggerating thus they don t take it too seriously the audience will be shocked for a moment but only a few of them would take the message behind the movie seriously and apply the green efforts in daily life however their efforts may not last long if they are not constantly reminded of what is happening on earth so movie only is not enough the media should give message more often through tv shows articles etc the government also should play a part in the effort of going GREEN by making campaigns being more strict to recycling effort etc so far people are more aware of the green efforts only on Earth day or Earth hour event which happens once a year after that they go back to normal life why not the world have Earth Hour every month and there are so many other things we can do if only people are not so ignorant fatinsy I felt that if the screening of movies such as The Age Of Stupid is being shown to a bigger audience the effect of media regarding environmental issues might have been much more effective as compared to if the movie was only screened in cinemas and indie film festivals In my opinion it is not always about getting the message across using the right platform It is also about the mass outreach and how many people can the message impact Even if the efforts by the media on environmental issues do little but to impact our conscience momentarily a bigger number of willing participants would do more substantial effect on the environment as compared to the initial number There might also be an increase in the probability influence from the people which might assist in tackling the environment issue wangshengde I think it is not effective How many people would spend the time and money to watch a movie like this Personally I would spend the money and time to watch movies like Iron Man 2 and Ip Man 2 I bet most people feel the same Come to think about how many people honestly care about the environment Everyone says Oh we have to save the environment and they still drink from plastic bottles Most people know about environmental issues but they don t seem to be bothered So even if they have no life and watch the movie they will talk about the movie and what they should do However they would forget about it it is just how the mind works All in All it is NOT effective canopychunhow I think that is film is mainly to scare people out to care the environment but this only will be a short term for people as they will stop helping the environment as they forgot about the scarily film pearlyngoh776 I feel that this movie is effective up to a certain extent It may be effective in scaring people into submission but how long can it last The media may be a powerful tool to speak to the people but look around you all the issuses that the media is addressing are stuff like how to look good for YOURSELF its no wonder people nowadays are dying from anorexia or bullimia People only allow themself to be afraid or to be interested in what they saw If they have no passion in the issue they might just be fearful at all the effects that the movie created the world to be and therefore be afraid for their safety but as long as it does not affect them in a large way And thats what it really is people just convince and persuade themselves that its just a graphic effect and so they feel guilty for harming and hurting the earth cos of sensitivity but how long would that last How far would one go for something thats is not directly affecting oneself or for something without passion Okay sure you may do it for just a week but what about in the long run Furthermore movies are so commercialised that people may just treat every beautiful explosion or volcano as a special effect and choose not to believe anything On the whole i do not think this is effective at all because lastly the cost of making this movie is less than the cost of getting people to recycle and save the world mdfawzi in my opinion i don t think that the age if stupid would be able to influence people s minds We ve been living in comfort for centuries Slowly but surely we re killing the earth for these comforts The only way for us to open our eyes is for us to live in the conditions that would happen in the future People will only try to change when they ve lived through the difficult life I find the age of stupid to be a interesting but interest alone is not enough to open our eyes It will be just like most awareness films viewed rated and then shoved aside To put it in a more eerie way we re sort of like committing a mass genocide since we re indirectly killing the earth and we re indirectly killing our own and everyone else s future glennong Most youths in the current generation are greatly influenced by the media The age of stupid will definately have a positive impact on us youths to start thinking of what to do and how to react if such a situation really occurs If so we ll definately try to save our mother earth so as to prevent the world from coming to an end However this effect created by the flim and media is not long lasting After a period of time many just tends to be lazy to help contribute a little effort to save earth Take the bring your own bag day as an example When it was first implemented it was quite a success seeing shoppers using their own bags when shopping else they would have to pay 10cnts for each bag However the campaign failed as supermarts continue to issue free bags on bring your own bag day at no charge for the bags just a donation tin next to every counters for shoppers to donate fo the use of the plastic bags at free will Thus the age of stupid will generally have an impact on us to start saving mother earth but only for a short term canopyaaron The idea of scaring kids into thinking about the environment IS a viable option Since after all we scare kids everyday into thinking that smoking is bad for health or having pre marital sex is bad Fear can be used as a tool to manipulate the minds of the youth However this film can produce two most likely outcomes Even if one fears or doubts his future whether or not there is a future the first outcome is total ignorance proven by the millions of The future will be types of documentaries and articles ignored or thrown aside Second will be a short term I want to do something at least outcome which might happen to those who actually care For the millions of dollars used to make the film more lives could be saved by directing those millions into healthcare or charitable organizations Besides 2012 is coming Why care about 2055 kimberleybruce I find that this clip is an eye opener for everyone as no one wants to be living in that state of life It will also be educational as everyone should take responsibility of the outcome of our planet However many would not be bothered as they might to too comfortable with their way of life and do not want any changes Mankind needs to understand that their actions have far reaching impacts that will affect us for years to come Perhaps we ourselves will never be around to experience the fruits of a our misguided labor but our children and their children shall suffer a terrible faith for our own narcissism brendyy Well It is a well know fact that Media are real powerful and most of us are influenced by the Media In our everyday lives we interact with the world locally or globally with Media bringing us the news and information However it seems like we re reading more of the impacts of Earth devastation instead of a better change We re introduced to new technologies that basically do MORE HARM to our Earth Therefore i doubt the Media effectively getting us into being environmental friendly nor making us minimizing the threats to our Earth sdend Well it is quite realistic of this film due to the very fact of ourselves experiencing global warming in these recent times To be truthful you can already feel the difference in Singapore s weather today The heat is getting more and more unbearable The movie the age of stupid actually makes us think back to the past of how we caused the earth to deplete even further But I think the true message is for us to start to play our part in saving the earth because it is not too late just yet stephteo This film show us the impact of what we have done to our Earth in 45 years time Which something that i do not wish to see This is the world that we wish to show our children Or we should do our own part in save earth If everyone play their part we will have a better place in the future logen1836 The Age of Stupid has given me a new paradigm of wad global warming has impacted our Mother Earth Im v disturbed after seeing the massive amount of damages that we are causing to the Earth every single day The weather in Singapore itself is atrocious We have no1 to blame but ourselves for not treasuring our one only Earth We need to start caring more If not now then when We as Singaporeans can start more Go Green campaigns locally by doing the 3Rs in offices schools homes Together we can do a little make a big impact when we combine all our efforts to save the Earth darryllim I would say the film would not be so effective As most movies like these would normally leave viewer walking out the theater forgetting about it and going on with their normal life This is probably due to laziness or time issues and monetary cost For effective earth saving methods to really happen i feel that it has to happen in larger scales to really see changes happen and the willingness of people to commit to the practices Either way the government plays a big part in this they can impose laws or heavier punishments for offenders or to have certain Eco friendly standards that must be met by companies Even so years of effort has to be placed in before changes can happen looking at the state the world is in now eryu After watching the movie surely more people will be moved to do something about the global warming around our world but it will not last for a very long period of time Going green to many people means having to pay more for products that are Eco friendly to the world I think to be able to impact people more to go green the government and the media has a very huge role in it If our government or the media did not even push this thing about going green the world would not change at all Er Yu The Media All powerful The mass media especially TV may be powerful But when it comes to going green it does not make much difference to the attitude of most Singaporeans Do you you belong to this group of people Explain why or why not By hueyhuey on 27 Apr 2010 Comment Like Report 1 Likes zusecon like this 22 Comments boonkeat No i often saw advertisements that show me the importance of going green and what are the ways of going green One of important reasons that i persuade that we should go green is Global Warming Every year there will be some increases in global average air and ocean temperatures widespread melting of snow and ice and rising global average sea level This will endanger everyone in the world So in order to not endanger everyone we should do something about it and the something is Going Green and everyone has a part to play leonardcheah Definitely Television a tool in the various types of mass media used to reach out to the masses may be powerful However the materials that are shown in this media such as Advertisements Drama Serials or even the News does not always necessarily indicate the importance of Going Green Most Singaporeans prefer substantial content that provides insight to issues that may have some concern with their daily lives From the broadcasting of the News about social and political stance to the scripts planned for Drama Serials there is some or almost no mention about the topic of Going Green With little attention and details given in this type of Mass Media to influence and inspire the attitude of most Singaporeans does not make much difference kaynaing I ve arrived Singapore just a month ago and I know only a small group of Singaporeans my calssmates and my teachers There was something going on in SP for green day a few days ago What I found out was that most of my classmates are not interested in it In my opinion most people use television for entertainment purpose and for some people it is a news resource For me I ve seen some advertisements about going green and I like them But do I really participate in Going Green after seeing those advertisements on TV The answer is No Most singaporeans attitudes may also be like this because they are too busy to concern about environment Some people also think Green Day is an inconvenient thing for them as I heard one of the teachers said Cannot drive to school have to take bus for SP green day so inconvenient only one day By this I realized that people are participating in green day activities not because they want to but because they have to Everyone here in Singapore I see is under work stress For them where is the concern of going green Most singaporeans concern and interested in their daily issues and they don t have enough time for environment So i think it is not their fault if they don t don t take part in Going Green although the TV is a strong mass media and if the government want the people to concern about it work stress on singaporeans should be reduced If the singapore people have more free time I hope they will surely take a look at the nature in which they are surviving and will also participate actively in Going Green Activities justinchua No As always Starhub is always promoting people to Go Green with the channel National Geographic Channel always having commercials about the extinction of endangered species Like what people say the resources are finite which means it can and will run out given it to be consumed by the rate in which we are using Also Television advertisements are mostly skipped by the audiences which means it also serves little such as to help the people to go green In my opinion the Media isn t really promoting people to go green If they were to go green there should not even on their television sets as it requires electricity nor purchase print newspapers since it also probably causes Deforestation hohaokeet Have to disagree on this one Yes the media makes the effort to tell people what will happen if global warming continues and what not however people are just not listening The main reason is because they do not believe that it will really happen Most humans have this kind of thinking whereby they will not believe anything until it has really happened For example the near extinction of the siberian tiger People hunted it and halfway through others say that continued hunting will cause them to go extinct They did not listen Now when the tigers numbers have dwindled astonishingly fast people finally stop We do not listen to reason until something has actually happened One more thing this so termed Earth Hour I feel that it s useless a waste of time and I therefore do no participate in it Do they really think that one hour will help Imagine the people who work If they are forced to turn off everything for one hour wouldn t they have to compensate for that one hour later on This means that the power saved in one hour will still be used up later on I therefore have come to a conclusion that it is just a futile attempt at going green saving the Earth darrentan I don t think I m influenced by the mass media to go green In my opinion by repeating messages of going green over and over again the mass media is turning people away from conservation Because we are blasted by messages like SAVE ELECTRICITY and REUSE REDUCE AND RECYCLE every time we turn on the television the once powerful commands become mere suggestions over time They become indistinguishable from commercials The way the whole going green message is used as an advertisement tool isn t helping matters either Products with an Energy Saving slapped onto them sell better than their non environmentally friendly counterparts because people like to think they did something to help It s like donating ten cents to a busker it won t really be of much help but now no one can say you did nothing Rather than doing things that can REALLY help the environment like driving less or separating recyclables from trash people would rather spend a little bit more on energy saving appliances to ease their conscience To this day some people in the States think that global warming is a conspiracy I might be making a faulty assumption here but I think there are some people in this very country who think the same way The way the mass media is telling us to be environmentally conscious is almost excessive and it isn t a stretch for one to be convinced that the government is trying to brainwash the population These skeptics might even now be convincing others that global warming is a lie using the way mass media is spreading the go green message as evidence backing their claims norman No i personally do not agree to this statement First of all there have been so many advertising campaigns and research done to prove that the world is really collapsing Examples such as Pamphlets distributed pasted on lift lobbies There is one example where research is done for global warming caused by burning of fossil fuels car exhaust At the rate which its occurring now the polar ice caps may melt soon Another way where media tries to advertise people to go green is through Television Advertisements Newspaper Advertisements They have also posted pictures of what could probably happen to the earth in the near future As Of such i strongly believe that something should be done to save the Earth koey Yes I do agree that when it comes to going green the media does not make much difference to the attitude of most Singaporeans As powerful as the media is it won t help much if we ourselves choose to ignore them People like me usually would not watch shows related to going green as we find them boring Even if the content is exciting we just treat them as a source of entertainment and would not pay much attention to the message the show is trying to convey What s more Singaporeans are usually lazy and think that going green is too troublesome for them despite the harm that it might cause Also some people might think that the little things they do won t help much Never do they realize that it is this thought that stop everyone from going green If everyone could just play their part and not do it only if everyone else does going green won t be that difficult KaiChin weesiang2410 No I do concern about the environment and believe that it is our part to keep the Earth clean Though the mass media is powerful and I come across some of the go green commercials such as saving energy and it would actually help but sometimes it is silly because the people are trying to be hilarious in the video to draw attention I would prefer it to be more serious to show stronger impact and emphasise on it Going Green does not mean coming out with an idea to change the world we can simply start doing it by going shopping with a trolley so as to cut down the use and production of plastic bags Even if we use paper bags instead of plastic it is still not a good idea because trees are being cut down in the process So the conclusion is we need to let everyone know simply doing something simple like using our own bag to carry the stuff we brought make a big difference Secondly although mass media is powerful there are things they do not mention like the Chinese tradition whereby during the 7th month which is also known as Ghost festival we can see people burning incense Why in the first place are metal bins provided under the HDB flats My view is the government is trying to provide us with a place to burn the incense paper Although burning incense paper will lead to air pollution the government did not try to stop the Chinese from doing that as it is a Chinese tradition I pointed out this point because it is not easy to change someone s thinking and it is impossible to change the tradition 1 person may sound little but when a whole nation is doing it the pollution is far from what we can imagine siumin No I do not think it is true Like mentioned the mass media is indeed powerful In Singapore it is hard to find a place without signboards and advertisements reminding us about the importance of Going Green The television especially is particularly powerful In this modern time I do not think there are many households without at least a simple television these days As a result the television can influence more than expected Even simple yet creative short videos can interest and impact a million people easily However in my opinion I think that the videos produced are generally more comedic and funny which I believe was to attract the attention of the new generation But to me I believe that the video should take a more serious stand to further emphasize the impact of the need to Go Green Thus it is not how powerful the mass media is that impacts the project of Going Green Instead I believe that even though the mass media may be powerful but when lacking the appropriate talents to fully make use of it it is still considered useless THu zawmyohtun I totally agree that the mass media especially TV does not make any influence in the attitude of most Singaporeans in the project of GOING GREEN when it comes to going green For young people what they expect to watch on TV is that make them joyful laughing and interesting such as some funny TV programs and movies They just skip the programs when broadcasting about GOING GREEN because they think that this is boring and not concerned with them I think this may be the nature of the young people that they don t want to do anything that Is not concerned with them For older people there is no time for them to think about GOING GREEN although they want to do something that can be helpful for changing for their environment because stress from their jobs are quite massive I do not belong to this group of people because I think that humankind have the ability to stave off the climate change We need to find ways to save energy and resources and reduce our carbon footprint For examples limiting car use can be an great way of reducing our individual carbon footprint Finally what I want to suggest is that government should do something more that can motivate the spirit of the people to become one of the member of GOING GREEN shumsihui I agree that the mass media plays an important role in influencing members of the public to go green in Singapore especially being so technologically advanced today With it as a mean of spreading the message of going green a larger target audience can be reached and become aware of the notion However as much as the media may encourage citizens to go green it ultimately depends on how much the message affected Singaporeans attitude towards the environment instead of how powerful the media is If Singaporeans are willing to make the effort to save the earth thereafter then it has been effective On the other hand if Singaporeans are not bothered about going green I for one feel that all the advertising by the media is not going to work I believe the latter is what s happening for majority of the population in Singapore Perhaps reaching out in a more personal and direct way could be more fruitful fathu Yes I belong to this group of people The mass media including television may play a role in encouraging us to go green but that role in my opinion is insignificant Messages of being environmentally friendly and saving electricity may be followed by some especially those who are concerned about the state of which our planet is in but for the majority of society it is hardly taken note of This is particularly visible in Singaporean society Most Singaporeans do not care much about such things as most of us have a busy lifestyle and tend to have the mentality that they alone would not make much of a difference Most Singaporeans would rather find money to pay the bills and put food on the table for their family instead of buying fluorescent light bulbs or plant a tree to save Earth because environmental catastrophe may seem too hard to be believable in an efficient country like ours where everything can be solved by the PAP government or so we think Another thing to take note of is the ignorant character of human nature itself How many times have you seen in our history where the way we live our lives have been changed by mere messages being shown to us by the media Since the 80s the media has bombarded us with messages regarding the spread of HIV On the contrary the number of deaths caused by HIV has increased by the millions since the 80s This situation of global pandemic is no different from global warming They both are a capable of destroying mankind and sadly it is still not being firmly controlled Ignorance in human society is only eliminated when we with our own eyes see the imminent danger coming to us and realizing that we do not have much time No form of media including TV can make a significant impact to curb ignorance a basic and detrimental characteristic of human nature vforvivian Yes I belong to this group of people because I am not the type who pays attention to environmental stuffs I agree that the mass media especially TV may be powerful but not many people watch commercials Or probably they would not pay attention to certain advertisements unless they are interesting I believe that when it comes to going green most people may find it

the temperature in the range that it is moderately cool and also the right temperature to protect environment janessapjh I think that it is acceptable for SP to have air conditioned room for lectures and tutorial however I think that there should be motion sensors so that SP can be efficient in saving energy and cut costs at the same time p1064627 I think that some room or office can switch off air con when there is not people inside in room Because before this I saw many room have no switch off the air con keshias And if I m not wrong the MLTs are often very cold because it is not like the classrooms where lecturers tap their access cards and the lights aircons switched off simultaneously logesh I agree I mean the amount of electricity that can be saved is mind blowing Yes Singapore is incredibly hot however there isn t a need to blast those air conditioners as if the world is a furnace For example the temperatures in some shopping centres and educational institutions are extremely low All the classrooms I go to are cold sometimes but I make it an habit to increase the temperature if its too cold Seriously I think we can save a lot of energy It wouldn t hurt p1032723 From my viewpoint shopping centres are alright as there s usually many people and sport lights around creating a lot of heat People are moving around instead of staying in 1 spot hence generally people won t feel cold in shopping centres However classrooms in SP are usually very cold and many students do feel it However we re able to freely adjust the temperature in most classrooms The point is that did anyone adjust it No From my experience students tend to bear with the sheer cold till they had enough before finally telling the lecturer Why is this so Frankly I m not even so sure myself Multi purpose halls in many different areas of Singapore should be pointed out too The air cons temperature are usually set to very low especially when there s entertainment events like concerts performances Indeed this is not necessary as most of us do feel very cold And yes it is rather a wastage since setting it at cooler temperatures below 25 degree celsius consumes more electricity I assume the respective authorities of these facilities are aware of this and there could be a special reason behind it for setting air cons at temperatures in which majority finds it unbearable Perhaps we should interview and ask them too for their opinions in regards to this issue s55769 So far no one has broached the topic of us becoming air con addicts Have we become so accustomed to air con that it has become indispensable and irreplaceable in our lives Can we sleep without the aircon on Can we study in tutorial rooms and lecture theatres without the aircon at SP Can Singaporeans survive without aircon What do you all think p1032723 Replying to this comment So far no one has broached the topic of us becoming air con addicts Have we become so accustomed to air con that it has become indispensable and irreplaceable in our lives Can we sleep without the aircon on Can we study in tutorial rooms and lecture theatres without the aircon at SP Can Singaporeans survive without aircon What do you all think I m not sure about other people for me I don t think I can survive without Air Con Should I sleep without Air Con I ll may feel hot my head may feel the heat from the pillow I may then sweat as a result and this cause me unable to fall asleep easily This is considered a serious impact In regards to studying in tutorial rooms and lecture theatres without aircon I ll will treat it as studying in classrooms in Primary and Secondary schools I recalled myself sweating most of the time and with this discomfort it s not possible to concentrate fully on the lessons or to do work I had a teacher who always has a BIG circle patch of sweat formed on the back of his shirt He never failed to sweat before in classroom In special rooms where there s aircon he will always set the temperature to the lowest possible Everyone felt cold except him Though I m not sure about others nor have I seriously asked others opinion in regards to this topic I would really like to make the assumption that whether Singaporeans can survive without aircon or not is all based on genetic factors To simply put it some people just don t feel hot so easily and don t sweat while some others are the complete opposite like the teacher I ve mentioned above To those people who don t feel hot and sweat easily they don t feel as much discomfort without aircon and can carry out regular activities more smoothly or efficiently I ve been to some of my friends homes without aircons and they don t even switch on the fan I was sweating so much while they aren t They say it is cause you ve just reached and need to settle down awhile 1st but I sweat continuously for hours till I went home With these my conclusion is that aircon is a good to have for some of us while a must have for some others in terms of carrying out some of our regular lifestyles even sleeping properly or doing work smoothly Genetic factor plays a key role in this issue p1032273 I agree that places such as shopping malls and offices in Singapore are too cold I know that we switch on the air con to make us feel cooler and refreshing but setting the temperature to as low as 16 degrees celcius is unbearable and it is much more than we really need I have friends in SP who keep telling me that they need to wear thick jackets to keep themselves warm in class everyday However people do not realise that if they do their daily things under this cold environment daily they will slowly be adapted to the coldness and when they now step out of the air conditioned room they feel very warm more easily and this will cause the air con temperatures to be lowered even more in classes Blasting the air con can also harm the environment as carbon dioxide is released This will lead to the increase in the surrounding temperature and will also cause the air con temperatures to be lowered too So to me it is a continuous cycle that can hardly be stopped but is leading to the worse Therefore to stop this for worsening we should start by slowly adjusting the air con temperatures higher until it is set to a suitable temperature If the people in the past can survive and still do their daily routines without air con why can t we do the same Therefore we need to do our best to solve this problem as it will benefit both us and the environment francischeng I disagree that places such as shopping malls and offices in Singapore are too cold In Singapore the weather is hot and switching on air con is 1 of the way to cool ourselves Why will we feel cold Its because of the long hours in a low temperature room When we step out of office or shopping mall we will feel hot again due to the climate Blasting the air con is certainly harming the environment Air con can be adjusted to a certain temperature to allow it to cool the room and reduce the amount of pollution that it made Using air con for office is a neccessary as it cool the room so that people can have a better conditions to work Brain will work better at a optimal temperature of 20 degrees celsius p1032033 I agree Singapore s Shopping Centres are indeed to cold I do not think that there is a need to blast the air conditioners An example will be classes in SP The sight of students wearing thick clothing is very common in the school I do not think that blasting the air con to around 16 20 degree Celsius is considered cooling I think it is more of unbearable discomfort than cooling Blasting the air condition is definately unneccesary The different between the temperature of the surrounding in Singapore and the temperature in an air conditioned room is very different As the temperature in Singapore is usually hot and humid a person will be unable to adapt to the surrounding temperature after spending a long time in an air conditioned room A person will tend to sweat even more as the huge difference between both surrounding is very different Therefore I think that adjusting to a comfortable temperature is still the best Not only that we will feel more comfortable we will be able to save the earth by decreasing the usage of electricity fadedloves I agree with s55769 In SP students wearing jackets can be seens anyway especially when student just step out from classrooms or lecture hall due the to cold temperature of the Air con I believe temperature can set at ard 26 deg to ensure cool effects and not cold effects It not only benefits one s health but it also help mother earth to reduce the CO2 emitting into our atmosphere to ensure longer lifespan substain on this planet jiazhen It s true that air con is a very big part of our lives now as most people can t live without air con However we must look at the big picture if we use too much air conditioning it will bring adverse effects to the environment An example will the the CFCs that are released into the upper atmosphere from the usage of air conditioning Singapore is indeed too cold almost everywhere you go now you are able to find a place that is air onditioned To make matters worse all of the air conditioner s temperature are set to a very low degree What s the point if the majority of the people in the shopping centres are wearing jackets It s pointless to set it to such the air cons to such low degrees and then cover yourself up with lots of clothing In my opinion even if air con is necessary the temperatures should be raised higher At least this will help to a certain extent to alleviate some of the problem of global warming jamaica I totally agree In SP it is not rare to see students wearing sweaters walking around in the campus even though the weather is so hot as the classrooms are too cold Even in some shopping centers I do feel that it is also too cold after you stay indoors for a long time Aren t we suppose to be saving the earth instead of destroying it further In my opinion for countries like Singapore there is definitely a need for air con but I think that we should keep the temperature at 24 to 25 degree celsius huimin Indeed the temperature in shopping centres and classrooms are quite low People sneezing wearing jackets are commonly seen Turning the air con can helps to cool down our body temperture from the hot weather of Singapore However at the same time it s unfriendly to the environment and a waste as people are not enjoying it when it gets too cold Maybe in places consists of airconditioning should have sorts of sensors Whenever the temperture in the area rooms gets too cold temperture would automatically be altered to a suitable one for everyone hayitsadrian I agree to a certain extent Aircon has become a necessity for most people to sleep at night Without it we would normally feel uncomfortable as we are unaccustomed to the heat However if the temperature is way below 24 25 degrees it is really too cold perrygohyk I disagree to quite a large extent on this The air conditioner is a necessity in a concrete tropical jungle such as Singapore And also as we all know it is getting warmer year by year The older generation may complain that the air conditioners in Singapore may be working too hard but hey where it was only 28 degrees celsius at its highest in their time It is now 35 degrees at its highest right now The only salvation from this blistering heat would be the air conditioned malls here Though why anyone would wear sweaters in Singapore That is beyond me p1032596 I disagree that Singapore is too cold Due to global warming places around the globe have been experiencing a rise in temperature Singapore is no exception Thus it is essential for places like shopping centers to have air conditioning installed as this affects the well being of the people Research have shown that in the past decade temperature rise have been the most throughout the centuries With the rapid increase in temperature we have yet to be conditioned to the blazing climate and the rate of having a heat stroke have increased exponentially Work will also be affected if workers worked in an warm and stuffy environment In conclusion we need the air conditioning to function properly and for our survival p1032372 I totally agree with your statement SP sets its air conditioners to too low a temperature The environment that it gives make studying difficult even more than a classroom with no air conditioning Try setting the temperature to 20 degrees and you will have the uncontrollable shivers Concentrating is so much harder then and you will not absorb whatever the teacher s saying p0919403 I agree that classrooms are sometimes too cold for it to be a good study environment Not only does it waste resources students would not be able to give their 100 percent in class Research shows that when the temperature is too cold or too hot the brain is constantly reminding the body to do something about the condition thus it will be difficult for student to concentrate Therefore I think the only way to solve this problem is to maintain the temperature at 25 degrees Not only will it save cost it will neither be too hot or cold making the room a good environment for studying boo I disagree Singapore is a tropical country experiencing hot and humid weather all year round even more so now due to global warming However due to the brilliant technology that is air conditioning we are now able to experience minor winter that other countries take for granted Therefore we should preserve this culture of freezing our arse off and thaw them in the tropical heat outdoors I look forward to my next ride through Winterland Singapore p1031553 I agree Indeed people are enjoying the blasting of the air cons in the schools offices shopping centers But what most people don t understand is that blasting of the air cons causes Global Warming Sometimes the weather in Singapore is seriously hot and irritating at times It is understandable to on the air cons but we should all try to maintain the temperature around 25degrees So that even thou we can t prevent Global Warming from happening we could do our part to reduce the speed of it happening p1031847 I agree For instance some students in sp are clad in long sleeves or sweaters due to the aircon temperature in the classrooms that can go as low as 18 degrees i do not see why the the aircon have to be set till so low It may be a joy being in an aircon place but when it gets too cold it s not much of a joy anymore It becomes a part of global warming in which people didn t see that coming and tend to take it for granted The least people can do is adjust the aircon temperature to 25 degrees awbw93 I agree For instance i will always see some singaporeans wearing jackets or sweaters at shopping centers cinemas and even our own school itself I believe all of us that live in Singapore enjoy having a cooling shopping center as the weather in singapore is too hot but we really need to increase the temperature of the air condition as we are wasting electricity and killing the earth by increasing the carbon emission on earth nurshafika1b23 If it is the blasting of air cons in SP I would agree that it is unreasonable as the range of temperature that is comfortable for us human is around 19 to 21 degree celsius Going lower to the extent of 18 degrees is unnecessary as it only leads us to sickness Especially when we keep transiting from a very warm environment to a very cold environment However I feel that in shopping centres it is more environmentally friendly as they use a chiller instead of air cons Chiller is usually situated at one place and they cool the whole building unlike air con which needs to be placed in every area that requires it Besides the temperature of chiller are always observed and its thermostat is set in a way that it can only range from 19 to 21 degrees celsius unless on certain cases where the settings may have to be changed Altogether I think that we can switch on the air con but be moderate Try not to use them if it s not necessary p1031524 There is a time when indoors and outdoors of Singapore can be either warm or cold For example outdoors can be cold when there is rain plus strong winds and indoors can be warm when there is no rain for few weeks However

cost efficient to bring their own shopping bag pizzamizza SInce it s free why not Just like how we print our stuffs in Studio 19 This does not only happen to people around us but I do believe it happens and IS STILL happening in the whole of Singapore Problem They do not know how these will affect them Solution They need more public education and show them how this green thing is related to them chenxwdawn I agree with the suggestion to start charging people for plastic bags This will make consumers more conscious of the number of plastic bags they re taking using Actually Singapore should look into replacing plastic bags with paper bags when possible True that they cost more but if it s just a few cents maybe the corporations can look into absorbing these costs for the sake of the environment dtyw Perhaps a system could be introduced whereby consumers could be a given a few cents off their total bill if they brought their own bags to carrying their marketing from the supermarket Singaporeans tend to be suckers for bargains so perhaps NTUC or other major corporations could come up with a scheme such as this emphasising the money saved from bringing your own shopping bags and of course the benefits that it would have on our environment michelleang i think ikea is one organisation that has really made it a point to charge for extra consumption of plastic bags or any for that matter And im not sure but i actually think its a perfect deterrence I know i for one make it a point not to ask for the plastic bags at ikea can i help it The Typical Singaporean No matter how many kinds of recycling bins we ve placed around in our neighborhood people still regard and treat these bins like any other regular trash bins I can safely bet that half of any recycling bin you can find in the streets is covered with trash all sorts of trash Sadly simple actions like discarding the appropriate items into the By p1010800 on 03 Aug 2010 Comment Like Report 4 Comments greenism Well I ve had similar encounters of recycling bins that are filled with trash instead of the items that should have gone in the bins like paper glass and plastics Personally I feel that such acts of throwing rubbish in the recycling bins are a signal that these people do not see the importance and urgency to do something for the environment A good reason to support why they are doing such acts may be due to the fact that they like what you ve mentioned are ignorant on their part in saving the Earth However I feel that there are also people among us who could not be bothered and couldn t care less to do something for the planet I feel that as humans we often neglect and ignore things that do not affect and concern us Understanding this fact I feel that as long as global warming is not affecting us in a major scale Singaporeans will procrastinate the need to go green The most effective measure to encourage Singaporeans to go green is by government intervention Government bodies can pass laws to encourage Singaporeans to not throw unnecessary items in the recycling bins If they were to do so the government will probably have to impose some form of penalty for them As mentioned earlier if an issue is affecting us fines for example we ve got to do something about it softbunlet I think one big problem is that people still do not have sufficient education and awareness on the specifics of going green For example do you know that cardboard can be recycled but preferably not together with other paper Office grade white paper can be recycled into higher grade paper whilst cardboard and newspapers yield lower quality paper Mixing them creates wastage of resources by yielding an overall lower quality paper pizzamizza With all the raising awareness by all these campaigns that have been going on how can we say that they are not aware of the purpose of those recycle bins They existed ever since we were young The main problem is that they couldn t be bothered to sort their trash out and treat it like many other rubbish bin To solve it there is a need to raise awareness on how those act of theirs will affect THEM back keshias I feel that it s not because of the lack of education in environmental awareness Singaporeans just don t care And with the hectic lifestyles who can blame them for wanting to take the easy way out of everything Recycle How To Have you ever notice recycling bins in your neighborhood For me it is a NO therefore i feel that there should be much more recycling bins placed all around Singapore By huiling on 03 Aug 2010 Comment Like Report 9 Comments engkhong I agree with your comment about the number of recycle bins Maybe instead of the usual green bins placed around in the void decks we could consider the bigger recycle bins that allow separations of the rubbish we dispose of Sure it might cost more but what is this compared to the saving of our environment codenamebutter That s absolutely true They should start by placing multiple kind of recycling bins to help the public sort items like their beverage cans glass bottles and papers apart from what is truly trash and what can still be recycled and salvage D crazymadzy It is kind of true There aren t much recycling bins around the neighborhoods or maybe it s just my place The only recycling bins that i ve seen is the big rectangular blue one which says recycle papers That s about it The glass papers and bottles recycling bins are usually placed in popular and reknown places This shouldn t be the
