laptop is in sleep mode it uses 10 watts WOW All these unecessary use of electricity just for entertainment purposes or because of our laziness I did some research and found out that Screen Savers were invented to turn on after a period of time and change the imaged displayed so that burn in never occurred However in today s LCD displays do not suffer from burn in Reasons why we should get rid of screensavers 1 Screen saver causes unecessary electrical consumption 2 Screen saver is bad for your LCD screens 3 Screen savers can interupt and ruin important tasks Read http www interrupt19 com 2009 01 05 get rid of your screen saver for more information With all this new knowledge installed in my brain maybe I should get into the habit of shutting down my laptop as of today alvin2 said on 03 August 2010 at 9 04 PM I agree with mjquek but instead of just putting your computers laptops to sleep people should just shut down their computers It takes only a couple of minutes to start up If everyone does that plenty of electrical energy can be saved xian said on 03 August 2010 at 9 27 PM wow i didnt know about that thanks for sharing now i will take note of it when using laptop another way to save energy is to only charge ur laptop when you need to this way you not only can save energy you can also ensure that your charger doesnt overheat and spoil too soon bluefairy said on 03 August 2010 at 10 55 PM Wow I didn t know that That s a huge wastage of power But did you know that screensaver with heavy graphical motion consumes more energy than it is actually projected to save So if my screensaver is blank without any unnecessary heavy graphical motion I wouldn t be consuming as much energy right But the best way is still to the switch of your laptop when it s not in use charging your laptop only when it s necessary or even better Don t use your laptop Save energy save Earth crazymadzy said on 03 August 2010 at 11 14 PM wow I didn t know about this Thanks for the information If everyone put their laptop on screensaver mode imagine the amount of energy that is being wasted Another way to save energy is also to make sure that you don t overcharged your laptop battery especially when you re charging it Many people are lazy to unplug their plugs from the sockets when their battery is fully charged so they just leave it on eventhough the battery is full This is really bad both for your laptop and the earth Let s not be lazy and save energy So unplug the plugs jaynetoh said on 03 August 2010 at 11 27 PM I didn t know that screen savers consumes so much energy that we can conserve I

to use toliet paper only what you need and use water only what you need to save the environment While its in bad english and its just urgeing people I think its a good start mjquek said on 03 August 2010 at 8 18 PM There are many hotels in Japan that are currently going green If a person is not inside the room or if the room cannot detect any movement from any person the lights and other electrical appliances will then be switched off immediately I feel many hotels are capitalizing on technological advancements to go green Simple tweaks in the circuits can actually help hotels save a lot on electrical usage and fees But I got to disagree with Sean Not all hotels go green just to move towards its consumer taste I think it is also a fact that hotels can cut on operation costs if they go green Some hotel organisations also strongly believe in environmental protection and it is part of their mission and vision alrickoh03 said on 03 August 2010 at 8 38 PM I think that it is really awesome that there are hotels going green Hotels run on a 24 7 basis due to the nature of its business As such alot of energy is constantly being consumed by hotels If all the hotels in the world could employ such methods of going green the energy consumption throughout the world could be reduced greatly A lot of resources could actually be saved this way engkhong said on 03 August 2010 at 9 51 PM Going green for hotels is the next step towards saving the environment as like what alrick says the nature of their business is a 24 hour one However i feel that they can do more than just

are willing to pay for There are many other 2nd hand goods and used materials that companies would not mind buying from you or reusing them As such before doing your spring cleaning you could research on items in your home that companies would not mind paying for and earn some extra cash instead of throwing them away as waste sean03 said on 03 August 2010 at 8 45 PM The second hand market has always been and will always be around And yes I do agree that it is a good idea to sell it away to company or individual any item regardless it be a laptop or not to save the environement alvin2 said on 03 August 2010 at 9 38 PM I agree with sean03 Another alternative would be giving away any electronic devices or selling it rather than dumping it into the bin toinkie said on 05 August 2010 at 12 58 AM Yes I agree with Jayne And just to add on I don t agree with the fact that some people are using 2 or maybe even more than 2 laptops just for themselves Why can t we just limit ourselves to 1 laptop each farhana said on 23 August 2010 at 3 35 PM Yeap We can always give away our laptops or devices working ones please to those whom we know need them or probably the unfortunate individuals living around us Not only does inappropriate dumping releases harmful toxics by leaving your laptops devices charging or on for no apparent reason is harmful too you know So let s act on that now shall we Cheers Post your comments Latest Topics CDL s E Gen Challenge E Generation Challenge13 Recycled Stationary Items Deposit refund System Plant Vs Plastic Popular Keyword Tags Environment

transport unlike some other countries like in France and UK Even the road users hate cyclists on the roads maotao19 I donnot think so Because if the distance is short we donnot need ride a cycle If the place we want to go is very far we still can take the SMRT Because the train cross all over Singapore If everyone take a cycle to go to work or studay then how can we solved the traffic jam because of millionsof cycles especially for the certain time in the morning or at night deepster07 Maybe the government could build connectors to landmarks such as shopping centres This would certainly lure more cyclists into the green bandwagon Furthermore if they build road lanes dedicated for cyclists and that are sheltered from the road traffic then perhaps some may even find it safer to ride a bicycle to their destination However this would in turn cause more congestions as the road needs to be compromised for these bicycle lanes However on the contrary if people start cycling then the traffic will definetly decrease and so will the carbon emission This will certainly lead to a greener Earth fashhan8 cycling can help save time compared to when we wait for a bus or if we need to go somewhere that is near like for example from pasir ris to tampines we can cycle there instead of taking a bus it can help save time and easier for some people sean03 Agreed Most of the park connectors built for bicycle travel is simply just for the casual day to day kind of lesuire cycling If the governement really hopes to make cycling an impact not only on our health and for sports sake but rather to really help the environment and reduce traffic congestions and carbon emmisions the governement really should consider building roads The big kind complete with traffic lights and crossings for cyclist Have You Snap Gaia Have you participated in the photo sharing Facebook page Snap Gaia If not why not start today Visit http www facebook com snapgaia ref search now Showcase your place and it ll be a pity if we do not capture these beautiful sightings both plants creatures and scenery before us anytime and everywhere before its too late Looking at the pictures in Snap Gaia also reminds us how we can do our part to keep Earth and mother nature alive and vibrant caspertan Certainly iamnotme I have also contribute my part for Snap Gaia The photos are definitely gorgeous and all of them seem to tell a story about the Earth For example this photo of lavenders in Taipei I can sense the joy and satisfaction from the Taiwanese who planted them after going through months of hard work I cannot imagine how life would be if one day all these beautiful scenery and sights are gone Those photos are definitely a reminder to everyone about the importance to environment conservation So everyone what are you waiting for Do start contributing your story through photos to Snap Gaia now Dell Break Its Promise Dell was the first company to provide a timeline for eliminating toxic substances in all its products at the end of 2009 Dell was even given credit to be in the positive move in the Guide to Greener Electronics Apple HP Acer and Wipro already offer PCs free of PVC and BFRs However Dell breaks its promise and continues to use PVC vinyl By etorangesa on 15 Jul 2010 Comment Like Report 7 Comments jaynetoh I feel this gives a very bad image and impression for the company in the consumer s minds This is especially hypocritical and disappointing for customers I believe companies should not only think about making profits They should keep their promise and do a part to help save the environment What s your view on this sharon9280 We all know that more often that not companies promising to be socially responsible are just for show Of course I don t deny there are companies which are really keen about contributing to the society The reason why companies are committed to corporate social responsibility is to maximise their profits and to portray a good reputation If they don t keep to their promise they lose their credibility to their consumers That s the last thing they would want to happen As much as they want to cut costs going green isn t exactly cheap they would want to appear as socially responsible to their consumers as well That can be the motivation for them to go green Even if it isn t genuine at least they are helping to spread the message And when all companies combine their forces together I believe it would make a difference There are two sides to everything Looking at the good companies those which are really committed into making a difference we should applaud their contribution For example Honda labelled the most fuel efficient auto company in the U S attacks the issues of fuel economy and emissions The company aims to become the world s cleanest most efficient manufacturer Since 2000 it has been reducing its CO2 emissions from its factories and it still strives to deliver its promise What the company did was to focus on two alternative fuel technologies the natural gas powered Civic GX and the hydrogen fuel cell FCX It also created an infrastructure for hydrogen which most automakers leave to the oil companies At least we know there are companies like Honda out there we still have hope D xyrhs With regards this has made me even more concern about the issuing of green labels in Singapore The Green labelling or eco labelling refers to a scheme which awards environment

and solar panels They need to be built and have special areas in order to be effective Maybe companies should look further into this issues and come up with solutions which can help to save time and space for such sources of energy softbunlet said on 04 August 2010 at 8 19 AM I believe that countries will make the move toward green energy but widespread adoption will follow only much later This is because countries and companies have existing equipment and infrastructure that is still working and has not reached its end of life If they were to switch to green energy 1 perfectly working equipment will be thrown out waste 2 new equipment will have to be made depletion of resources 3 new green technology is still relatively costly and not as cost efficient profit decrease In the long run green is still the way to go But the way I see it the world will make that change just before the tipping point Just like how we procrastinate our work to the last minute Human nature By then green tech should have improved to the point of acceptable returns And everyone is happy Post your comments Latest
