  • Worms Revolution - Chen Chunmu 陈春木 - 草虫革命 | soobinart.com.sg
陈春木 Chun Mu s works convey fuzzy imageries Semantically speaking they are infinitely extensible such that they allow for readings into different dimensions which produce totally different effects each while the different meanings remain intimately interlinked The artist is like a sleepwalker uttering dream talk endlessly but always maintaining ambiguity Nevertheless if we were to trace the longitudinal development of his artistic style we would see that there is a

  • Vincent Leow: Rhapsody of Non-sense | soobinart.com.sg
s works Completed in 1993 Rhapsody of Non sense is a four part illustration of busts that well exemplifies these ideas The personages behind each of the four individually titled illustrations A Gone Case Mad Person Teddy Bear Muthu and Money Man are fleshed out by accompanying texts each written in a witty irreverent vernacular Expressed in these texts are disparate ideas about fame myth making the pursuit of money and how appearances belie inner truths et cetera Unlike the tortured figuration in earlier works Rhapsody of Non sense is clearly a one off humorous interjection markedly different in tone influence and pictorial tradition Just this year Vincent completed another series of portraits twelve pencil works with descriptive titles such as Portrait with Red Cap and Portrait with Unibrow that still remain obtuse and inscrutable These works extend the dimension of humour in Vincent s works reintroducing a fraternity of gawky men devised in other drawings as early as 1989 but tucked away and forgotten until recently Their identities are constituted superficially by colour type of accoutrements or distinct facial tics Trying to read further into the dumb faraway stares and silly inscrutable grins of the figures draw a blank Without any other clues or points of access into their inner personages these figures appear to contradict the belief that the human countenance holds the key to a subject s essential being In Vincent s latest productions heads are first and foremost monolithic structures and shells that may or may not be unravelled to reveal more significant interiors 8 Portraits charts the facial morphology of an unknown individual producing what looks like facsimiles at first glance With all intents and purposes Vincent has bestowed upon the figure a dour expression that presents an affront to read him any further In this way Vincent insists that his project is about nothing more than what is skin deep This is extended in Got Mountains and Trees Blue Fig 4 and Got Mountains and Trees Yellow Fig 5 where the accretion of etching lines is a purposeful exercise to try and erase the possibility of recognition and stump identification Black Requiems Singaporean artist Ian Woo has written Vincent to be a painter of icons from the contemporary world Nowhere is this description clearer manifested than in the series of works on black ink Vincent executed last year Seen alongside other drawings this body of works stands out for its stark elegance and brevity of expression Coolly detached works in the series appear at first to be influenced by the immediate cultural environment of Sharjah United Arab Emirates where Vincent has been based since 2008 as an art lecturer More interesting may be how they exemplify Vincent s long standing practice in adopting icons drawn from different sources and re fashioning them to speak about subjects of present interest to him Pills 3 is a pyramid shaped form comprising different coloured circles rendered in watercolour and overlaid on each other Perhaps a throwaway reference

convey very much the old notion of there being nothing new under the sun Whatever new variations there are would have to be the universal almost mosaic like effect across the canvases In contrast to Shen s earlier realism of an ethereal plain and flat nature the current paintings have a somewhat harder more disintegrated and more substantial look taking on an abstract feel to a greater extent thanks to
