    group singing and movements the training of innate musicianship within students The candidates attitude receptivity and engagement to the lessons will be observed along with important musicianship skills like maintaining tempo reproducing rhythm in the right tempo good intonation in singing musical responses independence of performance and the ability to perform collaboratively with others An individual audition at the Talent Academy The audition panel consists of a teacher from SOTA s Faculty of Music and an external specialist The panel may not always listen to the entire musical performance A 60 minute listening paper No prior knowledge is required Back to top Writing Exercise During the Talent Academy all applicants are also required to sit for a one hour Writing Exercise The exercise is meant to gauge the applicant s ability to reason and to express ideas coherently using the English language No prior content knowledge is required The exercise may comprise a short response to a text or an issue Back to top Music Audition of Instruments and Voice You will be expected to Bring your instrument to the audition The exception is for piano double bass drum kit and harp These instruments will be provided by SOTA Percussion candidates must bring their own mallets and beaters Playing singing from memory is not required However please bring the scores of the pieces you wish to perform for the panellists on the day of the audition Perform two contrasting musical works of not more than 10 minutes in total and a prescribed piece that demonstrates your musicianship and technical proficiency Sing and clap a few musical phrases that the panellist will play for you during the audition Speak about the pieces you have performed how you have prepared for the audition and other interesting points which you would like to share with the panellists The score of the prescribed piece will be emailed to you a month before the audition This applies only to candidates auditioning for Voice Piano and Violin Back to top Important Notes Percussion candidates should contact SOTA at least one month in advance to discuss instruments and specifications SOTA will provide within reasonable limits the agreed instruments SOTA will inform candidates of their individual scheduled time for the audition Candidates are to report to the audition venue at least 20 minutes before their scheduled time The panelists are looking for musicianship talent and an ability to learn It is recommended that the selection of musical pieces reflect musicianship and technical proficiency From past auditions the most popular audition instruments have been piano voice and violin The panellists felt appropriate to suggest prescribed pieces for the above instruments The audition panel consists of a teacher from SOTA s Faculty of Music and an external specialist The panel may not always listen to the entire musical performance For voice candidates only Voice candidates will be given a sight singing test during the audition They must prepare at least one song in Western Classical tradition and are not encouraged

    DSA to Year 5 SOTA Dance What you will experience during the auditions Portfolio Attire for the Technique classes Requirements for DSA to Year 5 SOTA Dance Applicants for Talent Academy Dance need to have had an extensive training in dance Classical ballet and or Modern dance and must demonstrate a high degree of self motivation and self discipline to embrace all aspects of dance study including the creative technical analytical investigative and theoretical aspects Applicants who wish to gain admission to SOTA Dance via the Direct School Admissions exercise will need to meet the following pre requisites Classical ballet background currently pursuing the major vocational grades OR Modern dance background at least 4 years of formal training AND Excellent standard of English written Students who have Modern dance background in addition to Classical ballet training will have an added advantage An interest in dance as a language for expression and communication is essential Back to top What you will experience during the auditions Candidates auditioning for Dance will participate in Classical ballet and Modern dance classes alongside the current SOTA Dance students to be assessed on their technical musical and artistic abilities Candidates will then engage in an analytical and critical thinking exercise where they will be expected to write about a specific topic on dance at the end of the audition Back to top Portfolio Candidate must prepare a portfolio to be submitted Please provide photocopies of the documents The portfolio can include the following items Classical ballet examinations certificates and results report or equivalent for Modern dance Evidence of participation in dance performances in or out of school such as participation in SYF Summer Schools competitions concerts or workshops Evidence could include certificates Letters of reference from schools testifying of the student s artistic experience and merit
