    Story telling to be the focus of Pre School Chinese Language Lessons Today Online April 19 2011 Story telling to be the focus of Pre School Chinese Language Lessons SINGAPORE Fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood and other fables folklores and myths may soon be the focus of the Ministry of Education s MOE first set of detailed curriculum guidelines for pre school Chinese language teaching Such a curriculum based on story telling is being piloted this year in a collaboration between the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language SCCL and NTUC First Campus in what could be the start of a review of the ministry s current guide for preschool curricula The MOE now has a general curriculum framework in place but it is not mandatory as the various public and private pre school educators subscribe to different methods of teaching If this new curriculum that we re developing can be adopted as a standard hopefully it ll form the basis for all assessments going forward That s something we ll work on in the future said Senior Minister of State Education Grace Fu yesterday The review is expected to be completed in two or three years The idea of using stories to trigger children s interest in Mandarin before transferring the language learnt to daily life comes as more families use English as a first language at home Ms Fu told reporters at yesterday s collaboration ceremony We d like to address this group of students and help them very quickly at the pre school stage to get into the growth of learning mother tongue if you like so that they ll have an easier time as they go into Primary 1 The SCCL which developed the curriculum said it will expose children to a wide repertoire
