    Students Challenge and Breakthrough Selection Results for 2nd International Conference on Teaching and Learning of Chinese as a Second Language 2011 1st Call for Papers 3rd International Conference on Teaching and Learning of Chinese as a Second Language 12th 13th September 2013 Login Contact Us Feedback Address Tel Fax Map With Bus stop MRT Stn Career Opportunities Feedback Form 中文 Home About SCCL Chairman s Message Chairman s Message I am indeed honoured to have been the Chairman of Singapore Centre for Chinese Language SCCL since its establishment in 2009 This role has given me great opportunities to work together with a team of high caliber professional staff with high resourcefulness and drive to handle challenging issues in imparting the skills and knowledge of teaching the Chinese Language particularly to our young learners in the schools I strongly believe that one of the key factors to succeed in maintaining sustainable growth of SCCL is good corporate governance On this note I would like to thank all the Directors of the Board for rendering their dedicated service to SCCL They have contributed greatly to the growth of SCCL by sharing unselfishly their wealth of expertise gained through their work experiences in public and private institutions either in education or business sectors With strong and continued support from both local and overseas institutes of learning and its various partners SCCL is progressing well To date SCCL has conducted a total of 114 courses for 257 classes with 84 of local Chinese Language teachers having attended the courses at our Centre With our Ministry of Education s emphasis on nurturing efficient learners and proficient users I encourage our teachers to either attend in service courses to upgrade themselves in pedagogy or partner with SCCL on research projects to explore new avenues for enhancing

    progress as can be seen in two key areas In service teachers training courses and Chinese language teaching research and development We have to date conducted 114 courses for 257 classes A total of 2 887 teachers have been trained This accounts for approximately 84 of the Chinese language teachers in Singapore Close to 90 of the courses have met or surpassed the standard set for quality teaching SFT index of 3 3 upon 4 0 by the Academy of Singapore Teachers AST Ministry of Education while close to 70 of the courses have met or surpassed the more stringent standard set for quality teaching SFT Index of 3 5 upon 4 0 by SCCL Apart from the in service teachers training courses conducted by SCCL targeting at all Chinese Language teachers in Singapore SCCL conducted School based Specialization Courses as well As at end of 2010 more than 1400 teachers from a total of 60 schools have benefited from it SCCL also provides professional consultation for schools and school clusters We have provided consultation for 20 schools over the past 2 years In addition to this we take in experienced teachers to undertake 10 week professional developmental research at SCCL A total of 17 Chinese Language teachers have completed their professional research with guidance from SCCL lecturers under the Enhanced Professional Development Leaves EPDL scheme introduced by the Ministry of Education School based Pedagogical Research aims to develop and justify teaching strategies that cater to the needs of Chinese Language teaching in Singapore We work closely with school teachers keeping in mind the Research Verify Teach 先研 后证 再教 spirit The research team in SCCL proposes pedagogical approaches or strategies that stem from theories related to language teaching the collaborating teachers then implement these strategies in their schools observing and improving in the process until the approaches or strategies gradually become more complete and effective All teaching approaches or strategies that have been proven as feasible after 1 2 years of experimentation will be refined into pedagogy and be widely promoted through conducting courses for teachers and equipping them with the ability to utilize this pedagogy Our collaborative partners encompass a range of school types including primary secondary and pre schools and research topics include teaching oral language skills written language skills and integrated language ability training The purpose of Educati on Research is to develop tools and resources that would aid in solving the problems that many Singaporean students face in learning the Chinese language and improve the efficiency and professional level of Chinese language teachers Currently 14 schools have participated in the development of education research projects led by SCCL Among these projects are the oral proficiency diagnostic tool for lower primary school students graded Chinese readers for primary school students specialized dynamic balanced corpus of both spoken and written Chinese in Singapore and Auto marking system for Chinese compositions Up to March 2011 two sets of Teaching Tool kits have been produced by our research teams
