  • Is there really a difference between an Interior Designer and a Contractor? - Renovation Blog - Renonation.sg
a construction company Interior Design Institute Lasalle and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts NAFA offers a part time course on Interior Design Their training focus on essential skills for an interior designer which includes technical drafting knowledge model making skills basic computer drafting skills and visual presentation techniques and so on Singapore Institute of Technology SiT offers Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Interior Design Their course focuses on intelligent interior design to improve quality of life revitalization reuse and re imagining and creation of imaginative and stimulating environments In conclusion anyone who wishes to be an Interior Designer need to be professionally trained from Design Institutes cost of attaining an interior design qualification is not cheap focus on improving quality of life through aesthetics and manipulation of form function and space need to have knowledge of traditional drafting and modelling techniques plus the latest in computer aided drawing CAD and visualisation and need to work with the Contractor to bring the design concept to life In short due to their training Interior designers are creative and probably know the 101 interior design principles and fundamentals to suit your lifestyle Thus they play a very important role in laying down the design fundamentals of your home renovation Like an artist Interior designers have personal design portfolio and ego to upkeep and most likely would not tolerate anything they deemed ugly As every successful renovation project builds up their portfolio and reputation Interior designers usually take pride in their work Certain interior designers are actually better at certain design themes than others However because of their background Interior designers are typically more expensive to engage Think of it as the premium service that you are paying for their design consultation fee on top of everything else to complete a more design challenging job If the interior designer is expensive to hire the cost should be justified with creativity and quality Hence always ask for the qualifications of the Interior Designer However take note that some Interior designers are simply not cut out for this kind of job since interior design is simply not in their blood Therefore always remember to perform a background search and ask for their portfolio Contractors implement the design drawings and take direction and instructions from the interior designer Their expertise is in the implementation of a design and not in its creation Hence a Contractor need not be interior design trained Contractors are the hands and legs for the interior designers Usually for home renovation there will be a main contractor who oversees and manages the rest of sub contractors Home owners who hire a Contractor in place of an Interior Designer should be mindful that the skill sets of a Contractor are vastly different from an Interior Designer Although some experienced Contractors do have pretty good design ideas and even offer reasonable and good perspective sketches it is only because they have picked up some design skills when they executed a number of design concepts

  • Should you plan for Home Renovation? - Renovation Blog - Renonation.sg
origin carpet budget Square Rooms inspiration Home and Décor Urban Cubemistake diy green renovation choices Categories Room Design HDB Interior Design Renovation Posted by eve Should you plan for Home Renovation Aug 18 2012 529 view s Do you have this mindset when you start your renovation journey Do the following stories sound familiar Ever wondered why these happened Our renovation was completed in a mad rush We took too long to decide on the interior design and whether we should engage an interior designer or a contractor We were overzealous and went overboard In the end our renovation had to be stopped due to huge budget overruns We were so caught up with the moment that the thought of not able to fund the renovation never even crossed our minds So what do these stories have in common Simply put a plan is akin to a map A map contains landmarks and thus provides you a direction on how to reach your destination Milestones are set in a renovation plan and these shows you how far you are away from the goal When the unexpected happened you can make decisions on what to do next In fact you can always intervene at any stage when things do not go according to the plan Hence with careful planning you will be better prepared and anticipate problems before they happen Having a renovation plan helps to ensure that the renovation is completed With minimal risks and conflicts Within your budget and Within your deadline It is as an essential communication tool which helps convey your needs and expectations to your prospective interior designer or contractor Armed with this your interior designer or contractor will be able to Come up with a design that meets your lifestyle needs Keep within the renovation

  • Home Renovation is a Journey - Renovation Blog - Renonation.sg
a Journey Aug 15 2012 426 view s I remember sharing this revelation to my loved ones friends and colleagues after our home makeover Actually this wasn t really a rocket science or anything but somehow this struck me During this exciting journey many new relationships were forged Indeed I got to know many people from different walks of life who were directly or indirectly contributed to the renovation process Some of them like Ambrose a funky furniture salesman eventually became a family friend He was even invited to our house warming and we kept in touch even after he had moved on to another industry This journey actually starts way before the keys to the new place were ready for collection In fact I realize that planning and preparation for the home renovation starts the moment a couple decides to spend their lives together Hence home renovation is probably the first major project for any couple to embark on before marriage For me it was a project especially dear to my heart since the dream of owning our very own place had finally come true I also discovered that home renovation entails more than just giving the place a cosmetic makeover it is actually about creating a shared space to support a couple s real and not perceived lifestyle This particularly rings true since our daily habits are pretty distinct and the fact that we work in a completely different industry only serves to make such differences more apparent Contrary to popular belief planning for a home makeover does not equate to when the renovation starts and ends It actually involves a myriad of tasks which actually spans from determining the lifestyle needs and the budget to be set aside selecting the most suitable renovation personnel choosing of home
