A study of 133 managers last year by researchers at the University of Massachusetts found that if an auditor is likable and gives a well organized argument managers tend to comply with his suggestions even if they disagree and the auditor lacks supporting evidence Likability is more important and harder to pull off on video than in person Sometimes this can result in a style over substance effect People watching a speaker on a videoconference are more influenced by how much they like the speaker than by the quality of the speaker s arguments according to a 2008 study in Management Science The opposite is true when a speaker appears in person The use of personal videoconferencing is expected to grow 47 annually through 2017 according to Wainhouse Research a Boston market research firm Social networking also places a premium on likability More employers track employees likability on in house social networks and chat services They recruit those who are trusted and well liked to spread information or push through changes Some companies take these employees social clout into account when handing out raises and promotions See Full Story on online wsj com Filed Under Career Progression Tagged With Employee

Email Enigma When the Boss s Reply Seems Cryptic 21 March 2014 by Digital Curator Leave a Comment Many employees labor over emails seeking guidance from the boss only to receive a cryptic reply such as Great or Sounds good or no answer at all The result Confusion and frustration The potential for email misfires between bosses and subordinates is mounting as the volume of email grows and more people read it on the fly on mobile devices Sometimes the boss is too rushed to read Employees fuel the problems by sending poorly written emails Deeper issues can arise if bosses and employees communication styles clash Jill Campen was baffled recently when her boss Marty Finkle fired back a one word reply to her carefully thought out email asking for his approval on a client training presentation she had prepared Done Ms Campen a consultant at Scotwork North America in Parsippany N J puzzled over the message for a half hour then decided she was too upset to resolve the matter by email She called Mr Finkle and asked What is going on with you Done What does that mean Mr Finkle chief executive officer of Scotwork North America a negotiating skills training and consulting company was dismayed He told Ms Campen that he trusts her to do a good job and went on to explain that he had been rushing to answer a client s email and empty his in box of the 100 to 150 emails he receives daily When her message popped up his first thought was We ve already talked about this I could get rid of this really quickly By the end of the conversation the two were laughing See Full Story on Leave a Comment When most people think about networking seldom do they think of it as a means to recruit a new team member that is unless your business is growing rapidly and pursuing an aggressive round of hiring My company happens to be doing just that When evaluating opportunities to network I intentionally look for events that will help us meet our goals I consider three factors relevance reach and return on investment Are we relevant Before committing to a networking event there needs to be sufficient evidence that the event itself is somewhere we ought to be The event attendees need to be interested in working for a company like ours and doing the sort of work we need them to do For instance we ve recently been looking for sales and marketing employees With this in mind we choose to participate at events that draw students who have just graduated from college or university and are looking for their first full time job What kind of reach is there Knowing that we re a good fit for an event is one thing but in order to go we need to know we ll get in front of hundreds of hopefuls The last networking event we went to was attended by 600 students Then once we re there how do we stay front of mind for these potential employees Prior to the event we post social media updates to help spark interest in our company and we align ourselves with the event using the event s hashtag Letting local media know that we ll be there is another step we take to increase our visibility Lastly what will it take to see a good return on investment When networking with students the staff we invite to represent the company are relatable friendly and best of all can speak from personal experience having joined the company straight out of school themselves Part of our recruitment strategy is to share a one page report that provides candidates with an overview of our company and features testimonials from team members We describe the benefits of working with us and give instructions for how to apply online See Full Story on blogs wsj com Filed Under Networking Tagged With Business David Ciccarelli Employee Events Networking Top talent walking out the door Here s how yourself why didn t I see it coming If you are honest with yourself you know that in some way you did see it coming You just didn t take the time to do something about it When a valued employee gives notice it s too late to salvage that employment relationship Most companies conduct exit interviews through the human resources department as a perfunctory measure Exit interviews won t help you the leader of the lost talent because those meetings are nothing more than hindsight conversations Want to prevent future flight of your top talent Don t wait until it s too late conduct a stay interview an idea popularized by the book Love Em or Lose Em Getting Good People to Stay recently released in its fifth edition Stay interviews serve two purposes to let employees know how valued they are and to proactively identify problems that may lead to a team member s departure According to research released recently from the Institute for Corporate Productivity these proactive career conversations were identified as one of six talent management practices that companies use to boost employee engagement Here s how you can incorporate this powerful retention strategy with your team Tell people
