it s been a while Most organizations now realize that assessments of employee satisfaction should occur far more frequently than once a year Asking How You Are More Often One company trying to make this happen is TinyPulse which was recently profiled by Sharon Florentine in CIO Here s how it works Through an email with a unique link TinyPulse anonymously asks your employees one question at a time at least once a week you can decrease the frequency to every other week if you like Most companies do performance reviews once a year but businesses change more than once a year says TinyPulse founder David Niu in the article You don t check your finances once a year You don t evaluate your business strategy just once a year so why do we put culture and people and their engagement and satisfaction last The single questions TinyPulse asks are open ended enough that employees would easily be able to answer them and provide additional feedback but also targeted enough that HR and management could hone in on trouble spots and actually fix them Niu says What s especially helpful for HR purposes are the specific questions TinyPulse uses They reminded me of the 12 statements Gallup uses to determine employee engagement They re great to print out put on your wall and ponder every day as a litmus test of your company s culture In that spirit here are seven questions you can use to gauge how happy your employees are The first three come from CIO s article about TinyPulse The other four come from other sources as noted The key with all seven is to make sure you re getting honest answers from your employees anonymity helps And to make sure you re asking far more freqently than once a year See Full Story on www inc com Filed Under Entrepreneurship Tagged With Employee find yourself getting used to answering the same questions over and over What do you do What s your growth like How do you make money Before you know it you can and often do answer these in your sleep However there s one simple question that can be shockingly difficult to answer Who is your competition It s a challenging question for any startup that is trying to fill an unmet need in the market After all it s that very need that probably inspired you to start your business in the first place right While it can be tempting to claim that there is no direct competition it s important for founders to step back and challenge themselves to take a broader view of what really constitutes competition When my co founder and I first started BodeTree a web app for small businesses we gleefully told anyone who would listen that we had no real competition This wasn t an exaggeration no one was positioned at the intersection of small business management and funding the way we were Why then did our seasoned advisers and investors respond incredulously every time we told them that More importantly if there was no competition why weren t we seeing the wild growth we expected The answer came to us after months of digging through data and working closely with our users As it turns out in looking for other companies that did the same thing we did we lost sight of the big picture For BodeTree our main competitor wasn t another business Instead we found ourselves fighting against an even more entrenched enemy misalignment See Full Story on blogs wsj com Filed Under Entrepreneurship Tagged leave their jobs are actually quitting their boss or manager This is a case of it s not them it s you It may be easy to point the finger and assume that you aren t the issue but the truth is that with numbers like that there s room for improvement across the board The truth is that most manager want to be good at their jobs they want to be effective leaders but they are oblivious to what they re doing that turns employee off Want to know why your bright eyed go getter employees are heading toward the nearest exit Here are six ways your management could be failing 1 Your mood shifts with the tides You are human so it s OK to have bad days Employees can forgive a manager s ill mood here and there but making a habit of unpredictable swings will only make you more unapproachable I once had a boss that we called The Bear most people assumed he earned this nickname due to his large stature We actually called him that because you were never sure if you were getting a teddy bear or a grizzly bear from day to day That guy was all over the place Part of being a leader is gaining the trust of those who are supposed to follow you When an employee can t trust that you will be open to hearing positives and negatives of a project or situation problems will fly under your radar or never be reported If an employee never really knows what to expect then communication engagement and innovation will suffer Above all learn humility You are allowed to make mistakes so be prepared to own up to them 2 Helicopter manager Much like the parent a helicopter manager is one who micromanages the deliverables of an employee While it s understood that a manager is to be included in big decisions to expect everything to fly past your eyes is a waste of
