foster joint research between a select few of the world s top research universities and Singapore based knowledge organisations SMART s first interdisciplinary research group focusing on infectious diseases is scheduled to commence work in July 2007 Establishment of the Singapore Delft Water Alliance SDWA at the NUS Faculty of Engineering A collaboration between NUS Dutch water specialist Delft Hydraulics and the Public Utilities Board SDWA is Singapore s first multi institutional and interdisciplinary research centre for water knowledge It aims to advance science and technology in the water sector and test bed findings on relevant real world problems Research education and development of specialist consultancy services are the three main thrusts of the centre Launch of the new Offshore Technology Research Programme NUS Centre for Offshore Research Engineering CORE which will host the programme will receive research grants of 5 million over the next three years from A STAR and Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore The Economic Development Board will support CORE through its Training and Attachment Programme The combined support is a significant boost to CORE s vision to be a leading offshore engineering centre in research development and application of technology for the advancement of the offshore and maritime industry A new permanent home for Temasek Laboratories TL NUS a collaboration between NUS and Defence Science Technology Agency Located in the vicinity of the NUS Faculty of Engineering the new Temasek Laboratories building will house offices and advanced laboratories for aerodynamics control and guidance electromagnetics materials research signal processing information security and nonlinear dynamics studies First vulnerability study on local impact of climate change by a 14 member international team led by NUS Tropical Marine Science Institute Over the next two years the study will focus on several key areas including rainfall temperature and wind examining data from 1960 onwards to predict scenarios for the next century Establishment of the Interactive and Digital Media Institute IDMI As Singapore s first inter disciplinary research institute in interactive and digital media it will house eight laboratories in the areas of mixed reality sociable robotics games ambient intelligence multimedia sensing cognitive and social studies arts and creativity and multimodal analysis The institute will undertake leading edge application inspired basic research in emerging fields relevant to the critical and future needs of Singapore To date 17 exemplar projects have been identified many of which are expected to be launched within a year Establishment of NUS Environmental Research Institute NERI as a leading global centre of inter disciplinary research education and expertise in the environment particularly in areas affecting Singapore and the region It will coordinate integrate and facilitate R D and educational initiatives across NUS in the areas of water wastes air quality energy sensing security environmental health and policy issues Building on the strengths of NUS faculties schools and research centres NERI will     Singapore and NUS Institute of Systems Science and Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy the launch of a new concurrent Bachelor of Laws and Master in Public Policy degree programme by the Faculty of Law and Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy Commencing in 2007 this programme will prepare law students for a career in the legal civil or foreign service Students could complete both degrees in 4½ to 5 years instead of 5½ to 6 years if done separately the launch of a new Bachelor of Business Administration Honours and Master in Public Policy double degree programme by NUS Business School and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy Commencing in August 2007 this programme will prepare students for careers in government and its enterprises Students could complete both degrees in 4½ to 5 years instead of 6 years if done separately the launch of new Master of Laws Maritime Law and Graduate Diploma in Maritime Law Arbitration programmes by the Faculty of Law commencing in August 2007 The master s course offers a comprehensive overview of legal matters relating to commercial shipping marine insurance shipping regulation and ocean policy The graduate diploma will train professionals such as master mariners chief engineers and graduates from other disciplines working in the maritime sector the launch of a new Master of Science Speech and Language Pathology degree programme to meet the growing demand for speech and language therapists Commencing in January 2007 the course is the first professional practice programme in speech and language pathology in Singapore It is also the first degree programme offered jointly by the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and the Faculty of Arts Social Sciences the launch of a Bachelor of Science BSc Nursing degree programme by the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies starting from August 2006 Outstanding students will be offered the opportunity to proceed to the Honours year leading to a BSc Nursing Honours This is the first full time undergraduate degree programme in nursing offered by a local tertiary institution the launch of a BSc degree programme in project and facilities management by the School of Design Environment starting from August 2006 The aim of the programme is to groom future industry leaders who can make decisions shape policies solve strategic and operational problems and implement best management practices in the built environment the launch of a Bachelor of Business Administration with specialisation in accounting by the NUS Business School starting from August 2006 Apart from being equipped with accounting and management skills students will be able undergo internships and sign up for mentoring programmes with graduate students The course will start off with an intake of 100 students and will gradually increase to 250 a year revamping of the real estate degree programme at the School of Design Environment SDE for students to specialise right from the start of their course and choose from a bigger offering of modules such as real estate finance investment management development

    at the Singapore General Hospital GMS will offer a four year graduate level entry medical programme leading to a Doctor of Medicine MD degree Students will devote the third year of their course to research projects based on either basic or clinical science They will have the opportunity to work side by side with clinician scientists in both the GMS and Duke University A new residential colleges project was launched to add a new dimension to learning and living at NUS Expected to be completed by 2009 this development will have eight residential colleges and graduate housing to accommodate some 6 000 students Each college aims to have its own character with a multi disciplinary mix as well as integration of seniors and freshmen There will also be facilities which will act as common ground for developing social and intellectual bonds Residential colleges will be located at the former Warren golf course and linked to Kent Ridge campus by a multi tiered vehicular and pedestrian bridge Three of the University s most generous benefactors the Yong Loo Lin Trust YLLT Lee Foundation and The Tan Chin Tuan Foundation donated a total of 159m to help elevate the quality of NUS education and research The donation of 100m from YLLT is the single largest gift to a tertiary institution in Singapore from a private donor Apart from enhancing facilities at the Faculty of Medicine the gift will accelerate the development of eight areas which are of particular importance to Singapore s health needs including aging neurosciences cancer infectious diseases and immunology The Faculty was renamed the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in recognition of the gift Lee Foundation s 30m donation will be used to establish the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies and the first full time undergraduate degree programme in nursing at the Faculty of Medicine The donation will also fund the Lee Kong Chian Scholarships and two Lee Kong Chian Centennial Professorships The Tan Chin Tuan Foundation s 29m donation will fund four Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professorships and help promote collaboration with the University of Malaya through various initiatives including the Tan Chin Tuan Visiting Professorship in Malay Studies In honour of the donations from the Lee and Tan Chin Tuan Foundations NUS named one of the two interlocking wings of its new University Hall the Lee Kong Chian Wing and the other the Tan Chin Tuan Wing The Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy was officially opened by Minister Mentor Lee A conference on Managing Globalisation Lessons from China and India with Mr Lee as keynote speaker was organised to mark the occasion Launched in August 2004 the LKY School has 50 students studying master s degree courses in public policy and public management The Government announced that the historic Bukit Timah Campus will be returned to NUS NUS will move its Faculty of Law to the Bukit Timah Campus in 2006 NUS continued to build up and diversify joint degree programmes with overseas

    a Bachelor of Social Sciences Honours in Actuarial Studies Economics Master of Arts Southeast Asian Studies Bachelor of Philosophy Bachelor of Science Honours in Chemistry Physics Mathematics and PhD in Physics with the Australian National University ANU The courses are offered under the Joint Degree Programme established by NUS and ANU the first such programme between NUS and an Australian university a joint PhD programme with Supelec to prepare students for leadership roles in R D with a focus on infocommunications microwave and radio frequencies microelectronics power systems and control a specialist master s degree programme in International Business Law with the East China University of Politics and Law ECUPL It is the first overseas degree programme to be offered by the NUS Faculty of Law Students in the one year programme will spend six weeks at NUS and the rest of the time at ECUPL in Shanghai a master s degree programme in tropical infectious diseases with the Novartis Institute for Tropical Disease University of Basel and Swiss Tropical Institute NUS has set up a defence technology laboratory focusing on advanced electromagnetics and radar research jointly with France s leading aerospace research agency Onera and French institution Supelec Called SONDRA Supelec Onera NUS DSTA Research Alliance the lab was officially opened in April at Supelec s campus near Paris NUS Defence Science Technology Agency DSTA and the two French organisations contributed 2 million in funds for the first two years of SONDRA s operation Institute of South Asian Studies ISAS was established as an autonomous research institute of the University ISAS establishment reflects the increasing economic and political importance of South Asia and the strong historical links between South Asia and Southeast Asia ISAS will complement existing research and teaching programmes on South Asia within NUS NUS Nanoscience Nanotechnology
