    your stamina improves During the Breathing Apparatus Proficiency Training BAPT you run cycle and climb ladders all of this with your fire fighting gear on Strength You ll exercise in the gym to develop your different muscle groups You ll also train a lot with the medicine ball You can expect to become much stronger by the end of BRT Agility flexibility and coordination There will be exercises specifically designed to improve your agility reflexes and coordination This includes the Flexible Psychomotor Training FPT and the SOC The FPT will help improve your responses and reflexes and the SOC will help improve your coordination and agility You ll also be doing some rock climbing to fine tune your fitness Why do it During a crisis you are expected to use rescue equipment lift injured people and work under difficult conditions You need to have good reflexes to react quickly to changing circumstances You also need to be flexible enough to crawl in confined spaces to rescue people You ll need a lot of strength stamina and endurance to do all of the above and more in an effective and safe manner The only way to be prepared for such situations is to be well trained and fit What is it like Some of the training will be tough at first You ll be doing more push ups than ever before and you will sweat like never before Your muscles will ache and will be sore for the next few days But believe it or not you ll eventually get used to it You ll become much stronger and you ll be able to do things that you never could before Some tips Even though the training will be progressive your training will be a lot easier if you re already

    But don t worry the CA suit will protect you from the effects of the gas You need to be warmed up before you can go inside this gas chamber To warm up you ll have to run a short distance in your suit The highlight of this training is that you ll get to remove your mask in the chamber to experience tear gas first hand You may be selected to go through the Emergency Response Specialist ERS or fire fighting course where you ll also have to go through Hazmat training In Hazmat training you ll wear special protective Hazmat suits to work in areas exposed to hazardous chemical leaks or spills Why do it In this modern age chemicals are a common commodity and are found and used in many situations Some of them are hazardous This increases the probability of chemical related accidents taking place As a rescuer you need to be prepared to rescue under these conditions The CA training imparts the skills you need to handle such situations What is it like CA training is tough You need to be physically fit and alert to get through this training You ll soon learn that it s not easy to run in your CA suit while breathing through the breathing apparatus You ll also know what it feels like to have tears rolling down your eyes without your control Yes this will happen when you remove your mask in the gas room The tear gas in the room will create a burning sensation in your eyes much like the burn when chilli powder gets into your eyes In fact you won t just cry your mucus will flow out as well It s one of those things that may be unpleasant but you ll want
