  • Fungkimunkees: Building a Singaporean Circle of Funk
played with other groups before pooling together Jacqueline explained As local musicians we pretty much know how to meet people and play around and it really helped that because all of us have been playing in the industry when we got finally together our friends already knew certain people individually so word spread We re brave in that we keep encouraging each other go keep going out and playing music with other people so we keep learning and keep making connections she added It was these connections that eventually landed them the Bridging the Blues gig at Esplanade early last month after their first residency at Crazy Elephant got the attention of Kelvin Smokey Ng lead singer of Singaporean blues band Skunk Jive and organiser of the weekend blues event And as it turns out the show was a breath of fresh air We grew together as a band the most while preparing for the Esplanade gig said Fraser And it was also a very good getaway because it was our first time playing together at Esplanade and they treated us very VIP and we really enjoyed it Starting off as a funk trio featuring Fraser Arvin and Sultan the group quickly grew over the next two years to form the septet not a word we get to use a lot we know now keyboardist Erica being the latest edition to the group As a 5 piece band we can play funk said Fraser but having 7 members also adds a bigger atmosphere and image to the band like the big band feel You have the two horns playing harmonies as well as the guitar and keyboard harmonies as well as the bass and drums doing their funk thing But unlike most local funk bands the group adds a little spice to their live shows with scores of original music which Sultan says is not common in Singapore due to the genre s recent introduction to the public consciousness Mostly funk is playing covers but this is the first time we re doing originals so it s kind of new in Singapore Mostly it s rock alternative pop Nonetheless the Fungkimunkees have their eyes set on bigger and better things both in Singapore and within the region What I personally want Fungkimunkees to be is a very established funk band in Singapore as well as maybe the South East Asia region for the time being says Arvin We would love to go to Madison Square Garden and all these other countries but that s where I would think I want Fungkimunkees to be a very professional established band in Singapore and South East Asia At the same time Singaporeans are a difficult audience to please as Idah shares that Singaporeans prefer to observe than participate Fraser says I think one of the toughest things to do in Singapore is to get a Singaporean audience to get off their seat and dance and I want to be remembered as one of
