  • Inch Chua & the Metrics System: Certainly More Than An Inch
Bumfuzzle the band rocked out to The Chefalo Knot which was an interesting mix of both mellifluous symphonies and delicate guitar tones coupled by the rocker edgy vibe of Inch s powerhouse vocals Seemingly exploding and bursting forth with the passion and desire to perform Inch was energetic often prancing about on stage her shoulders bobbing up and down with each strum each breath she took an example of her excellent stage antics and showmanship Photo by Cliff Yeo Courtesy of Esplanade Theatres on the Bay Delving straight into her next song the band wasted no time for rest the deft transitions between songs was a testament to Inch s amorous desire for performance to showcase her wondrous music craft to the world with utmost pride The arena was suddenly filled with an inexplicable awe and amazement as Inch s haunting chilling voice stole the limelight and embarked on a journey on its own flowing through the crowd tugging on heartstrings and inducing goosebumps as the acapella introduction of Artful Dodger resonated from the acoustics This gentle rhythm gradually progressed into harsh striking chords with breaks between the regularities of rhythm Coupled by Inch s signature rebel like belts the song was truly a brilliant masterpiece from Inch herself In the next song Dear Paramour her fans were treated to gentle subtle tones instead a distinct contrast from the upbeat tunes of her previous songs The highlight came when there was a momentary pause in the middle before Inch dived into an emotional belt one whereby Inch s raw powerful vocal prowess was displayed for all to witness and admire It was evident that Inch held the people who supported her musical career in constant remembrance Taking time to thank the Esplanade crew Inch wanted to appreciate the organisation s

  • Urbandub in the Concrete Jungle
fans Urbandub consists of Gabby Alipe on vocals and guitar Lalay Lim on bass and back up vocals JanJan Mendoza on drums and John Dinopol on guitars and back up vocals We wanna see how wild you guys can get Come on Gabby screamed as he stirred the crowd into frenzy From where I stood I could hear fans singing along to Soul Searching which was named NU107 Rock Awards 2003 Song of the Year I could only infer that Urbandub already has a huge following It s actually not surprising once I realised Urbandub has close to 400 000 likes on their Facebook fan page quite impressive if you ask me Their next set Gravity intrigued me It seemed like Gravity was a fusion of rock and love ballad But I couldn t decide if it was simply a rock ballad JanJan and John kicked it off with an intro which undeniably displayed the band s rock roots An unexpected bass solo from Lalay shortly followed it Urbandub had balanced the two elements rock and love ballad well in the song even though it seemed like the lever was tipping slightly towards the rock side John and Lalay provided firm support on vocals and harmony which suited Gabby s voice reminiscent of Chris Daughtry s The Baybeats veterans whose first performance at the festival was in 2007 presented their next original The Fight Is Over It began with a soothing violin synth like sound from John s guitar As John played on Gabby said I wanna talk to my fellow Filipinos Purple blue light illuminated the stage as Gabby spoke in Tagalog The combination of sound and lights filled the air with a scent of romance According to Gabby The Fight Is Over is simply a song for our

  • Butchering The Stage In Style
Me Butch Coming all the way from across the Causeway this 4 piece post hardcore band is made up of vocalist Syarul Reza guitarist Wing Meng bassist Kevin Kong and drummer Jana Nair At that point they were doing their original We Are All You ve Got and already had my vote at the song s intro Upon hearing Syarul s tough vocals the deal was sealed The singer s tone is a unique mix of deep and rough which suits the band s post hardcore personality To add on to that he has a robust set of pipes with a huge amount of support from his diaphragm Standing alone amongst the crowd listening to We Are All You ve Got was quite inspiring Syarul especially was so absorbed in the beauty of the lyrics he was belting out and the post hardcore goodness that surrounded him Photo by Hiu Zhi Wei Courtesy of Esplanade Theatres By The Bay They continued to demonstrate their prowess in their respective instruments in Reconcile This was when guitarist Wing Meng truly stood out Not like a thorn but more like a rose among thorns wow great analogy for a post hardcore guitarist Dzul Wing Meng is an extremely proficient guitarist without a doubt a great asset to Love Me Butch In Reconcile I was particularly astounded by his effortlessness in switching back and forth between rhythm and lead guitar throughout the song He even flaunted his unbelievably lightning fast fingers by teasing the crowd with a couple of riffs and licks Clearly some of the audience members could appreciate Love Me Butch s music A handful of them were singing along while a few were crowd surfing Love Me Butch brought it down a bit with their next number Barricade It fittingly has
