  • Festival Di' Arts 2009 Speech by Dr Cheah Horn Mun
centered kind of presentation idea Then we gradually shifted into what I call the transformative usage whereby you bring in simulation packages you bring in software you bring in interactivity You allow the users now to interact with the packages and you transform in a sense that now you change the way we should teach and learn in ways that you cannot do without the injection of technology So we moved from efficiency more or less creeping into the transformative edge and before we knew it we are already at the start if not already in the middle of what I call the connectivity stage Whereby your users learners teachers educators researchers are not just connected and interacting with the package I think they are connected interacting with a whole range of people and this itself presents a lot of changes and challenges Let me say a quick analogy I think some of you might heard it before if I were to learn about evolution I can start with PowerPoint presentation to get to know the mechanics of it I can then move to simulation packages enabling me to perhaps accelerate the pace of evolution in simulated environment Thereby change the way I pick up knowledge but once I moved into the connectivity stage I would argue that the learner now is connected to hosts of resources I can connect the learner to a priest artist politician and to educators so on I can paired up ideas through interaction that can be very exciting but the kind of challenge we face is that I can also be very narrow if I tend to pick up ideas from one group of resources ignoring the rest of the resources available My idea my connection to the real world becomes that much more difficult to predict and I have to go very deeply very engaged and yet it can be quite narrow Herein lies a challenge for educators I think not only are we asking the learners to pick up knowledge skills processes and so on We also need to go ahead to present the balance of this fact for learners What I mean is this in what I call the efficiency transformative stages the educators teachers themselves are pretty much in control More or less predetermined roughly what you will cover what the students will experience At the end of the day a certain body of knowledge is being developed But when it comes to the connectivity stage you can no longer be so certain of the outcome because you are not sure whether the student is picking up knowledge from source A or source B Informing ideas that can be quite different from the original intent Those who are familiar may notice if you read the New York Times or Fox News of the same event being reported there can be diverse views being expressed So how as educators do we provide the scaffolding do we provide what I call the
