  • AS GOOD AS IT GTS | Evo
Porsche which started this trend with its Tiptronic gearbox and the industry has never looked back since The 911 Carrera GTS is available with Porsche s latest self shifter known as PDK which is an acronym for a 23 letter word that is German for twin clutch gearbox I thought these people were known for efficiency Anyway if you fancy a 911 that s closer in performance to the GT3 but not its 6 speed manual gearbox the GTS is your answer This car also allows customers options that are not offered in either the Carrera S or GT3 Besides PDK the GTS can be specified with rear seats at no extra cost Although these are best left for small children or short trips many customers have been said to turn down the prospect of buying a GT3 because they couldn t drive their kids to school in one Styling wise the GTS is more understated and doesn t make its driver look like a Carrera Cup fan boy when he steps out of the car The GTS sportiness is far more subtle but purposeful For starters it shares the wide body style with the Carrera 4 and has wider rear tyres as well to the tune of 305 30 ZR19 Combined with the optional centre mount RS Spyder wheels finished in black the GTS imparts a sense of latent aggression Around the back this is a 911 after all the 3 8 litre flat six cylinder engine of the GTS is an up rated version of the Carrera S VarioCam Plus power unit that has a redesigned intake system as well as a raised rev limit Along with the 23bhp increase in power the redline of the GTS power plant is also raised to 7 500rpm a thousand more than the Carrera S As a result the GTS is capable of a top speed of 304km h and when specified with the Sport Chrono Package Plus can be launched into 100km h from a standstill in 4 2 seconds Engaging this function is a hoot Select PASM Sport Plus Shift the gear lever to manual mode left foot on the brake and floor the accelerator At this point the secret display on the steering wheel spoke lights up with the words Launch Control and you re ready for take off Although it is unlikely that fuel economy might be of any sort of priority for anyone buying a 408bhp sports car it is still nice to know that the GTS motor is just as frugal as the less powerful Carrera S unit and returns an identical combined fuel consumption figure of 10 2 litres 100km The engine s improvements are accentuated by a standard fit sports exhaust that has a loud button When pressed it opens a flap within the pipes for a sportier note In a sports car like this it seems strange to drive it in anything other than the loud setting for it really does impart

  • HORSE WHISPERERS | Evo
could send you careening into oblivion Instead the steering feel transforms the 458 into an intuitive handler and really hot wires the car s reflexes into the synapse of the operator all it takes is a twitch of the helm to turn that thought in your head into reality on the road In particular Lung is very happy with the 458 s comfort and daily usability especially since the exhaust note can be as quiet or as noisy as one prefers However we hasten to add that apart from a mid range drone even the stripped out CS remained perfectly civilised in the cabin in spite of a rousing Tubi NGT system that was fitted to the car Like the California the 458 also sees the application of the 7 speed F1 dual clutch transmission which provides seamless shifts and no discernible break in power response times of the 458 s unit compared to the California have been further improved upon with the 458 boasting ratios and shift patterns in keeping with the engine s characteristics Left in fully automatic the gearshifts are brisk and it offers close ratio performance in daily runs There s also no need for easing off the gas while manually changing gears Full bore runs are best executed with the right foot buried in the carpet as each successive upshift of the gear paddle from 2nd to 5th is accompanied by a powerfully satisfying bang bang bang The 570bhp and 540Nm is very easily accessible and thanks to modern technology no longer requires manual gear shifting to savour fully There s also a trick valve that only kicks in with the kick ass exhaust note as you work the needle towards the red line in Race the engine starts clearing its throat at just under 3000rpm Sport sees this happening over 3000rpm which makes it ideal for town driving when you don t feel like being deafened by the drone before rising in pitch as you approach the red line The sound is already spectacular from inside the cabin but it sounds absolutely mental during a full throttle drive by We are constantly very conscious of the fact that the 458 will clear the 100km h blitz in under 3 4 seconds and a sustained run with plenty of road will see a maximum speed of over 325km h so we thought it best to keep an eagle eye on the speedometer since warp speed is too easily and readily engaged On the move the ride is firm but never hard In fact this is a trait shared by all three cars although the 458 adds a new element of refinement to the proceedings There s also a one touch bumpy road mode to activate on really bad patches of tarmac but during our time with the car the 458 was well composed over all but the worst bits of road that involved metal road covers Twin wishbones in front with unique L shape arms provide better longitudinal flexibility and transverse rigidity the former results in better bump absorption while the latter enhances handling The 458 carves up corners incisively if one is prepared to drive the car decisively and confidently All aspects of the car from chassis power transmission and the stupendous stopping force of the carbon ceramic brakes are perfectly balanced placing 100 per cent of your faith in the technology can easily transform novice drivers into seemingly competent racers on the track Unlike the Scud the 458 feels very light on its feet and is very easy to place even with plenty of traffic around which is reminiscent of the CS However unlike the CS the 458 is more like the Scud with the ample power on tap that will make light work of any circuit As Lung sums it up the 458 is a true point and squirt exotic that can be driven easily every day yet offers performance that surpasses the outgoing Scuderia and the earlier CS I ve already managed to match my Scud s time around Sepang on Pirelli P Zero Corsas and the 458 was on Bridgestone street tyres F430 Scuderia The Scud that succeeded the Challenge Stradale was unveiled in 2007 by seven time F1 World Champion Michael Schumacher who was involved in the car s development Like the CS the 430 Scuderia was intended to offer its faithful all the best technology from the world of Formula One as well as Ferrari s Challenge series Like the CS the Scud shed a hundred kilos compared to the standard 430 it also featured a more track focused suspension and had loads of carbon fibre bits huge carbon ceramic brakes and most importantly was given more power In the cockpit the most visible from the CS is the addition of the carbon fibre accented multi function steering wheel At the mention of multi function people tend to think of stereo controls and trip computers but the Scud s steering wheel was equipped with an F1 derived manettino toggle multiple modes to alter the car s performance parameters we left it mostly in Race a start engine button and LED indicators for optimum shifting points The bumpy road mode that has been re positioned to the steering wheel in the 458 can be found on the centre console together with the buttons for Launch Control Automatic gear shifting and Reverse Compared to the chassis agility of the CS and the 458 the Scud is an elemental force of nature that is effortlessly fast and confidence inspiring but we couldn t help but feel that some of the soul from the CS was somehow engineered away Needless to say the engine and F1 SuperFast 2 transmission shift times were cut to just 60m s versus the CS 150m s are beyond reproach but we find it lacks some of the involvement and direct feel that we enjoyed with the Italia and the CS Driven hard the shifts are lightning
