  • Nov 19 - 27: Math Modelling
    The highlight of the forum was when students had to collect data while sitting on various roller coaster rides in Movieworld Upon their return to the college groups continued to process their data with the help of various technology and presented their findings to the school In addition our students made friends with the Australian students over interactions during sports and games a Math Quiz as well as over a barbeque dinner hosted by the school Our students also took up the Mathematical Modelling Challenge from 24 25 November held at Griffith University The Junior High students were required to model and build a boat that was swift yet powerful while the Senior High students were given the opportunity to pose their own problems Working with their new group mates from different schools across Australia and Singapore our students were able to gain new perspectives and exchanged knowledge and skills with each other Students also gained valuable insights from their mentors mostly professors from different universities across Australia Here are some reflections from our students For the past 17 years of my life I studied Mathematics But it was only until this trip when I realized that I could apply Mathematics on a greater scale I was taught that Mathematics is important and useful I knew that Mathematics is going to be important in deciding my major in university or even my future career but I could not see the useful aspect in Mathematics However thanks to this Mathematical Modelling Challenge we had the chance to explore the seemingly most relevant and pertinent social issues in the world from the telescope of Mathematics It was close to foolish how I used to think that Mathematics is useless just because I was only taught the theoretical part of it Now I

  • Nov 24 - 30 Softball
    for their hospitality and Mr John Wu took part in the gift exchange with the school 达人女中 prepared various performances school tours and even invited us to join them in their lessons Their sincere friendliness and warm hospitality was a great experience and a memorable school visit Even though the exchange lasted only half a day the students have forged new friendships that they would treasure for a long time to come During the stay at Taiwan the team also had training sessions and friendly matches against some of the top Taiwanese softball teams namely 秀峰高中 福營国中 and 丹鳳高中 Knowing they were against stronger batters Coach Richard and Mr John Wu prepared the team in stepping up with fielding practice by doing more drills and focusing on catching flyballs practicing relays and throwing accurately as part of defence The girls put up a tough fight by stretching our potential and giving our best Through the matches the team learnt a lot and gained new game experiences that would be beneficial in preparation of the upcoming national tournaments The team was also given a very special opportunity to watch a baseball match between Australia and Japan at the Softball Asia Series 2012 It was a spectacular match where both countries putting up their best fight against each other They were able to see how professional players play a real match and capture the spirit of the game Watching the baseball game live inspired the team to improve their skills and also heightened their passion for softball In addition to trainings the team was also given the chance for some sightseeing and visits to some renown places in Taiwan such as famous scenic places in Taiwan like 自由广场 国立国父纪念馆 Sun Yat sen Memorial Hall 师大夜市 士林夜市 西门町 六福村 Leofoo Village Theme Park
