    Campus Life Campus Life 2012 Campus Life 2011 Campus Life 2010 Campus Life 2009 Campus Life 2008 Home Nov 23 26 SEAGA Conference Nov 23 26 SEAGA Conference 23 Nov 2010 Mr Najeeb Assan Mrs Tan Lim Bee Kee and Mr Chiang Ky from the Humanities Department presented a paper titled Engaging Youth in Global Environmental Issues Case Study of Dunman High School at the biennial Southeast Asia Geography Association SEAGA international conference in Hanoi Vietnam This year s theme is Understanding the changing space place and cultures of Asia For Mr Chiang and Mrs Tan this is the second time both teachers have delivered a paper on the Humanities programme of Dunman High School the last was at Quezon City the Philippines in 2008 Dunman High School is privileged to be the 3 schools from Singapore that presented at this international Geography conference This conference aims to bring together scholars policy makers and entrepreneurs as well as researchers and teachers from various disciplines who are interested to learn more about Southeast Asia The sharing by our teachers which was one of the concurrent sessions was well attended by almost 40 delegates from Malaysia South Korea Singapore the United States and Vietnam The 3 presenters shared with the delegates how the History and Social Studies teachers did their part to promote awareness of environmental concerns and encourage others to spread the environmental message through the Humanities curriculum The focus of the presentation is on how the compulsory Year 3 and Year 4 Humanities subject Active Citizenry Education helps our students connect and bring meaning to all the discrete facts and skills that they learn about environmental issues across different subjects such as Chemistry Biology and Geography The sharing also touches on the aspect of pedagogical approaches To effectively educate and

    in the Napa Lake Wetlands and trekking in the nearby mountains They also helped in the construction of an activity centre It involved building a mud wall and the leveling of ground with rocks and soil They had to loosen and transport the soil and rocks and pound the soil in order to level the ground Despite their fatigue it provided a platform for them to bond as a team and understand each other better During the one night home stay in the Tibetan village they realized how different the lifestyle in Singapore is In Singapore with the adults busy with work and children focusing on academic commitments many families may not sit down for dinner together every day much less spending quality time interacting with one another The students were touched by the fact that the families in Napa Hai have the habit of sitting around the fire after a day of labour drinking a bowl of hot tea and sharing with one another on the day s happenings One challenge that the team faced was the cold environment It was difficult to adapt to it and they had often huddled around a stove to keep warm It was a good time for interaction with the locals and sharing learning experiences in the Project The rugged environment of the village forced all of them to step out of their comfort zones They took some time to come to terms with the fact that they had to live without warm water to shower and the games television programmes and Internet However they managed to adapt to this lifestyle as they slowly found contentment in working on the construction site and enjoying the company of the villagers A 2 days and 1 night trekking expedition up the mountains were conducted It

    to 15 th December this year The main objective of the programme was to enable our scholars to understand the historical political economic and socio cultural landscape of the country and obtain insights on the States as a world superpower today For the immersion trip our scholars visited four prestigious educational institutions Brown University in Rhode Island M I T and Harvard University in Boston and New York University in New York known for their top positions in diverse fields of knowledge In Boston and Philadelphia our scholars went on walking trails that took them to various historic sites In Washington D C the students visited the U S Capitol the White House and the Pentagon which introduced them to different facets of American governance Besides these places they also visited museums and memorials such as the National Mall and Memorial Parks as well as the Arlington Cemetery National Museum of American History and the Smithsonian Institute Newseum and the Library of Congress These learning journeys not only offered our students insights into the events that influenced America and her people but also deepened their appreciation on how politics culture and history converge to shape a country s outlook and perspective In New York City our students had a taste of life as a New Yorker when they stayed in a hostel right at the heart of bustling Times Square They explored the streets on foot and took the subway and public buses to catch the musical Wicked on Broadway and visited places such as the United Nations Headquarters the Rockefeller Centre Guggenheim Museum and Metropolitan Museum of Art They spent a day serving at soup kitchens and were moved by the spirit of care and service that Americans showed to one another One highlight of the trip was a
