t agree more for this activity has allowed me to counter one of my greatest fears Although I couldn t help fighting fresh feelings of trepidation as I wobbled clumsily across the rope I was proud that I managed to achieve a feat I never thought I would be able to accomplish Fear is just an excuse that stops one from doing something that he or she has the potential to achieve To overcome fear one will first have the courage to be willing to try new things and step out of his or her comfort zone No matter how small and insignificant are the steps you take to overcome fear I believe that it is still valuable for it means moving a few steps closer to achieving your goal 10Y2J TAN WEI XUAN I enjoyed expedition as I enjoyed walking in the rain As we trekked on it started to drizzle and I could feel the jerry can getting heavier as well The mood and atmosphere were utterly gloomy I recalled that in Uniformed Groups we sing songs to lift morale take our mind off the loads we would be carrying I started singing to myself I told Zhen Yang about the ability of songs to lift morale and we decided to lead cheers My instructor heard us discussing about cheers and encouraged us to lead some cheers He said that as long as someone leads a cheer everyone else would follow Zhen Yang and I led the Oi cheer and the Kemakmak cheer and everyone did follow When it started pouring the expedition became really fun I got utterly drenched I no longer cared about keeping dry nor was I concerned about avoiding puddles I felt exceptionally happy to be braving the elements with my good friends I

feel it had benefitted my peers and I in many ways than one Not only did Heartbeat 2010 provide us with opportunity for personal growth it also paved the avenue towards the different aspects of learning about teamwork leadership and the multi ethnic Singapore Students participated in various activities such as the Amazing Race the Culinary and Culture Exposure the Signature Hunt the Traditional Games Tournament as well as Sandcastle Building Out of all these exciting activities I personally find the Culinary and Culture Exposure to be the most eye opening experience Through the activities organised I had the chance to cook and sample ondeh ondeh a special Nyonya delicacy and learnt the groove of the Banghra This not only made me understand people of the different race better but the engaging activities reminded me to appreciate the different types of food which are commonly found in Singapore I believe the other activities such as the Signature Hunt and the overnight stay at the Goldkist Resort strengthened my character in the areas of discipline and independence The unit that my group and I was allocated was much more isolated and rundown During the night we only had a bottle of 100 Plus that we had to share as there was only a vending machine and the convenience store closed after 11 pm While we were resigned to the fact that that one bottle of drink had to last the three of us through the night and the following day thankfully the teachers delivered a 1 5 liter bottle of water shortly I had never understood the importance of water till then and why we should not take what is given to us for granted I was dragged out of my comfort zone and the challenges made me a better person
