hostel of the University of North Sumatra Indonesia where we experienced a lifestyle with limited electricity and water supply and were rewarded with a two night stay at a local hotel for our hard work The objectives of this community project are to develop our service learning skills and work together as a team for a meaningful purpose We aimed to share the technology of water membrane treatment system with the local Indonesians We installed these systems in the schools and taught the local students with posters and games These water treatment systems with relatively easy maintenance will enhance the quality of water for the locals Hygiene and sanitation education were also carried out with the students to educate them on basic hygiene A highlight of the trip includes visiting both local and rural elementary schools in Medan There was a difference between the students from the two elementary schools was the way the children reacted to visitors The local students from town tend to shy away and are afraid to speak up while the children from the rural area are more extroverted curious and willing to follow us around Through the sharing of Singapore culture with the children in both schools interacting with them and teaching them simple English we got to learn more about the culture of Indonesia in the process and built up our teamwork and skills in organization through planning programs that were carried out in both schools At the same time we learnt to be more appreciative of our current situation comparing the basic facilities which the Indonesia school can afford to provide for their students while schools in Singapore are equipped with everything We observed that the local children find happiness from simple things in life For example they were enthralled by our games
