specifically a series of House initiated trips The first day was spent teaching the children some English phrases such as How are you and I m fine thank you One suspects that they never really understood those phrases Nevertheless they committed them to memory Their words came out well formed and enunciated though visibly flavored with their melodic native accent They remained wakeful and earnest even after a hard day s work in the shops Eight in the evening was no different to them than eight in the morning their enthusiasm and zeal remained It was a fresh sight how they responded with zest every time we asked a question Answers were forthcoming even if it took them a while to collect their thoughts and form those foreign unfamiliar words in their mouths They always got it right The following evening we started to paint their classrooms The walls were a faded white much more akin to grey beneath all that grime and dust Their surface was scarred and pitted with long years of neglect It was difficult it took three coats of paint to return its color We put on a few energy saving light bulbs in their classroom as well to brighten things up and to reduce the glare from the naked filament bulbs We followed that with another session with the children It was heartening to see that their passion and energy had not waned one bit They took to the lesson echoing the English words we were teaching them They kept at it absorbing everything like the proverbial sponge It was amazing how tenacious they were They were never really able to cope with saying things like gray triangle because it simply made no sense to them that the adjective could be before the object They tried again and again tirelessly before we realized that they were not yet ready for such a task We also taught them about oral hygiene resorting to the bogeyman to get the message across Your teeth would turn black and fall out if you do not brush regularly we told them It was effective enough We met up with some rickshaw wallahs in the school compound on our third day there Our purpose was to install dynamos onto their rickshaws to afford them some light and security when they ply their trade at night It was hard work trying to place things properly The language barrier worsened things we were grunting and gesticulating as if our lives depended on it Never before has the universal nature of crude sign language been plainer The last night we were in Moitree truly brought smiles to their faces Our mishmash of supposedly cultural items such as dikir barat performed standing up and amateur renditions of Singapore Town and Home were far from perfect The crowd s cacophony of claps and catcalls showed us what dusk hid from their faces Our parting gifts to our classes extended to beyond just the material ones like
