  • Chinese Orchestra
    Orchestra to greater heights Presently the school has also engaged several professional music instructors from the NAFA City Chinese Orchestra as sectional instructors The Orchestra also works in collaboration with Shangyin Music School to provide students with greater learning opportunities The Orchestra is also currently under the guidance of conductor Mr Dedric Wong De Li The Orchestra has been invited to perform at important functions and celebrations They include festival performances at the Istana the Millennium Chinese Cultural festival Opening Ceremony Singapore Youth Festival Opening Ceremony and the opening ceremonies of various international conferences In addition the Orchestra has been invited to perform in countries such as China Malaysia and Taiwan Since 1984 the Orchestra has also held its annual public concert in venues like Victoria Concert Hall and the Esplanade China s authoritative music periodical People s Music commented that the Orchestra s 1992 performances in Beijing and Shanghai had shaken the local music circles and that the high quality of the performance had been an eye opener for them In 2011 the Orchestra revisited Beijing for yet another outstanding performance Orchestra members have also participated in the biennial national Music Competition Chinese Music Section and won many prizes in both the ensemble and individual categories In addition the Orchestra has attained an impressive record of achievements It has won the biennial Singapore Youth Festival SYF Award of Distinction since 1983 Best Chinese Orchestra of the Year titles since the inception of this award in 1997 and the Gold with Honours Award consecutively at the 2005 2007 2009 and 2011 SYF Central Judging With the establishment of Dunman High School s 6 year Integrated Programme the Senior High section of the orchestra with strength of 70 odd members was formed as an extension to the Junior High Orchestra In

  • Guzheng Ensemble
    即现在的筝团 仅用了短短两年时间 筝团便在校内呈现了一场观摩演出 为了提高演奏员的演奏水平 筝组自1995年起 开始每年举办一场音乐会 名为 春之韵 1995年 筝团首次参加全国青年节华乐比赛 以出色表现荣获金奖 在接下来的青年节华乐比赛中 筝团始终保持着金奖纪录 在2009年的青年节比赛中 筝团再攀高峰 赢得了荣誉金奖的美誉 而筝团在去年的青年节比赛也表现不俗 获得金奖 去年首次参加青年节比赛的高中部古筝团也摘下了金牌 多年来 德明筝团稳健成长 不断进步 随着筝团的成熟与发展 在与狮城华乐团进行多年合作演出之后 前年 筝团首次呈现独立的古筝专场演出 筝乐情 奏响了德明筝团发展史上的新乐章 The Dunman High School Chinese Orchestra Guzheng Ensemble was established in 1987 as a small instrumental section within the main orchestra Within a short span of two years the Ensemble successfully staged its first recital In 1995 the Guzheng Ensemble inaugurated an annual concert series titled Spring Melodies in collaboration with the NAFA City Chinese Orchestra Since 1995 the Guzheng Ensemble has maintained a gold medal record at the Singapore Youth Festival Music Competition In 2009 it topped its own performance by clinching the coveted Gold with Honours Award The Guzheng Ensemble also did itself and the school proud in many other competitions and performances In 2009 the Guzheng Ensemble became an independent CCA when we split with our parent CCA Chinese Orchestra We have gone through many obstacles and challenges after gaining our independence but we have enjoyed much success as one CCA However even as two individual CCAs strong ties still remain between the Guzheng Ensemble and Chinese Orchestra Many performances are still jointly organized Over the years the ensemble has grown from strength to strength We take pride in the performances that we did In 2010 we staged our first Guzheng concert Heartstrings Last year the Guzheng Ensemble had jointly performed at the Esplanade Concert Hall with the Chinese Orchestra in An Evening of Chinese Rhapsodies 11 in conjunction with DHS 55th Anniversary and the official opening of DHS To provide greater exposure and on stage experience for its members the Guzheng Ensemble often accompanies the Chinese Orchestra in its overseas performance tours to China which includes destinations such as Beijing Tianjin Nanjing Suzhou Yunnan and Guilin Through these

  • Symphonic Band
    Band Symphonic Band The Dunman High School Symphonic Band was formed on 18 th March 1967 as a Brass Band In 1993 it became a Symphonic Band and in 2007 the Senior High band was formed Focusing on achieving the objectives of enriching the members musically and instilling discipline civic mindedness and team spirit band activities include concerts music camps music exchanges community service performance tours and competitions both locally and abroad One very important event on the band s calendar is the annual public concert Rhythm The Dunman High School Performing Arts Group in which the band plays a very prominent role has been awarded the Sustained Achievement Award by the Ministry of Education in recognition of its consistently outstanding achievements It was also awarded the National Arts Education Award Silver in 2003 and Gold in 2006 In the 1999 2001 2003 and 2005 Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging for Concert Bands the band won the Gold Award In 2001 it was also selected as one of Top Five Secondary School Bands of Singapore In 2005 the band won the Gold with Honours award In 2007 the Senior High band members combined with the Sembawang Wind Orchestra under the baton of their conductor Mr Desmond Ng participated in the 18th Australian International Music Festival held in Sydney and clinched the Gold award In 2007 and 2009 both the Junior High and Senior High Bands were awarded Silver in the SYF Central Judging for Concert Bands In the 2011 the Junior High Band was awarded Gold in the SYF Central Judging for Concert Bands In the same year the Junior High Band combined with the Senior High Band under the baton of their conductor Mr Desmond Ng participated in the 22th Australian International Music Festival held in Sydney as one

    High Senior High Co Curriculum Activity to enable students to explore international and strategic issues ISAC aims to unearth and develop the leadership potential and aspirations of all members so that they can become agents of change within their society and beyond Members are encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and take on leadership roles and through the challenges they face learn and grow as leaders who possess both the values and competencies for success in the 21 st century With a strong focus on National Education themes ISAC also aspires to imbue in a members love and respect for Singapore To achieve this ISAC provides a platform for students to participate in Model United Nations MUN Conferences where they are exposed to global and regional issues and taught to think strategically and speak confidently Weekly training sessions are also held for members to equip themselves with MUN skills and broaden their horizons through activities such as General Knowledge Quizzes and Debates ISAC has done Dunman High School proud picking up awards at both foreign MUNs such as the Bangalore Model United Nations and local MUNs such as NTUMUN The Dunman High ASEAN Plus DHAP Summit is the flagship event of ISAC where like minded aspiring students from local and foreign schools alike participate to exchange world views Participants are given to opportunity to engage in intellectually stimulating debates on pertinent issues that revolve around ASEAN and are challenged to come up with real life solutions to crises faced in the region developing their analytical and communication skills in the process Such exchanges also allow them to encounter diverse viewpoints and values which would encourage them to reflect on their own and develop in the process their ethical reasoning abilities The summit is now into its fifth year

    Activities Junior High CCA Senior High CCA Physical Education Sexuality Education Counselling Support Character Development Home Leader of Honour Leader of Honour Central to our school s Student Development efforts is our vision to nurture students into Leaders of Honour The Leadership Development Framework was introduced in 2006 and designed based on the theoretical framework conceptualized by Kouzes and Posner KP Model The Leadership Challenge It seeks to instill in every student the values attitudes and skills that would groom them into effective leaders However underlying these is the consistent emphasis on the importance of sound character and values as the pre requisites to be a Leader of Honour We have a tiered focus on the aspects of Leadership for each level Years 1 will focus on understanding the essence of leadership and that leadership is an influence They are also tasked to take on leadership at a personal level of their lives Year 2 will focus on learning to lead in small groups The knowledge and skills in KP Model will be infused from Year 3 Learning to lead members to accomplish tasks collectively and creatively Year 4 Learning to inspire others to a common vision Year 5 Learning to empower and enable others and Year 6 Learning to encourage the Heart Training and lessons using using experiential learning approach are built into the Pastoral Care and Career Guidance Civics Lessons each week In house and external vendors will also be engaged to provide specific training for different groups of student leaders Leadership Focus for Each Level YEAR 1 2 3 Leadership Focus Awareness GroupDynamics Model Challenge Outcomes Essence of Leadership Leadership is Influence Serve others in small groups Set positive example Experiment Take risks YEAR 4 5 6 Leadership Focus Inspire Envision Enable Empower Leaders of Honour Outcomes
