    life she never knew what she was doing She had worked as a clerk a waitress a house painter a bartender a saleswoman etc and all the time she didn t feel that it was right She would do the job for a couple of months then move on to the next and the next and the next Even when she won a standup comedy competition in the early 1980s and was named Funniest Person in America things didn t straighten out People were laughing at her not at her jokes because she was a woman and women at that time didn t do standup comedies So she stuck on through the rest of her onscreen career while people were more interested in prying into her sexual inclinations her love life was in a mess etc And it wasn t till recent years that Ellen DeGeneres who is now in her 50s seems finally at peace with herself with a successful talk show and a lovely wife When she was invited to present the commencement speech at Tulane University in 2009 she spoke about the struggles in her life and how she somehow walked through it She told the graduating

    when Tin Soon was ill my grandmother stayed to nurse him back to health In a testimonial from McAuliffe Davis and Hope 27th February 1925 To whom it may concern Lim Tin Soon has worked in our office as Audit Clerk for over four years He is leaving us to proceed to his home in Singapore on his own private affairs He has always been courteous hardworking and efficient He has a thorough knowledge of book keeping and we have much pleasure in recommending him to anyone requiring a Chief Clerk The private affairs was that Tin Soon married my grandmother at the Wesley Methodist Church in Singapore Besides Eric they had Daisy followed by Eunice Arthur Phyllis my mother and Clarice My grandfather worked as chief clerk and cashier at Lyons Motors Limited On 1st October 1946 he started work at Kee Suan Trading Company as an accountant as he was offered 450 a month much more than the 310 he was receiving from Lyons Motors This was subsequently increased to 500 A year later Kee Suan Trading did not require a full time accountant and kept him on a part time basis for supervision and checking of the company s accounts while he returned to Lyons Motors as accountant till he retired on 31st May 1961 He later worked at the Chinese Swimming Club Not one to remain idle my grandfather was honorary general secretary and treasurer of the Clerical Union and also the secretary of the Singapore Funeral Society I was very young then but I remember that during the holidays when I visited my grandparents my grandfather would drive home in his Hillman He would bring home a braised duck for us but he kept the neck feet liver and gizzard for himself During the holidays

    merely be tolerated To some degree tolerance carries with it a sense that one group is second class or less important than another and that means another more superior group having to bear with that which is unacceptable It implies that one is allowed to hold on to one s biases and prejudices towards others from the lower classes so long as one does not reveal them This may be the reason why such people view themselves as better or superior and those unlike them as objects of pity at the mildest level or hate at the level of bigotry It is my humble opinion that tolerance ought to give way to respect In the World English Dictionary respect is defined as an attitude of deference admiration or esteem Stephen Covey an internationally respected author and speaker compares tolerance with respect in a very powerful way when he says To tolerate is merely to put up with somebody To respect is to honour the person and his beliefs whether you agree with those beliefs or not There is a fear among devout people that respect will dilute their beliefs and worse still compromise their faith especially when they encounter an unbeliever Such a fear is unwarranted Our belief in God keeps us humble At the societal level where there is respect not mere tolerance there is a commitment to religious freedom in the world People of all faiths or no faith enjoy equal rights to live and express themselves Pope Benedict XVI in his 2011 New Year s message said Religious freedom expresses what is unique about the human person for it allows us to direct our personal and social life to God in whose light the identity meaning and purpose of the person are fully understood To deny or
